Position Summary

The Vac Truck Foreman / Hydrovac Foreman is responsible for leading and supervising vac truck and hydrovac crews engaged in underground utility construction, hydro excavation, potholing, utility daylighting, trenching support, and related excavation activities. This position oversees daily field operations, crew safety, production, quality, and customer service while ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with company policies, OSHA regulations, DOT requirements, customer specifications, and applicable federal, state, and local laws.

The Vac Truck Foreman serves as the primary field leader for assigned crews and is responsible for coordinating work activities, training employees, maintaining equipment, communicating with customers and utility owners, and ensuring all work is performed in accordance with company standards and utility damage prevention requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Supervise, direct, and lead vac truck and hydrovac crews in daily field operations.
• Plan, coordinate, and oversee hydro excavation, potholing, utility daylighting, trenching support, debris removal, and excavation activities.
• Assign work duties and monitor crew productivity, performance, and quality.
• Ensure all work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project specifications and company standards.
• Conduct daily jobsite safety meetings, toolbox talks, and pre-task planning activities.
• Ensure proper utility locates have been completed prior to excavation activities.
• Read and interpret utility maps, construction drawings, locate markings, and project plans.
• Coordinate work activities with customers, utility owners, inspectors, subcontractors, and other field crews.
• Operate vac trucks, hydrovac trucks, and related equipment as necessary.
• Perform and ensure completion of required pre-trip and post-trip inspections, equipment inspections, and jobsite inspections.
• Ensure required DOT documentation, daily reports, production reports, and other field documentation are completed accurately and timely.
• Train, mentor, and coach employees on safety procedures, equipment operation, and company expectations.
• Identify, address, and communicate jobsite hazards, utility conflicts, equipment issues, and safety concerns.
• Ensure crews maintain required PPE and comply with all safety policies and procedures.
• Report accidents, injuries, near misses, property damage, utility strikes, and equipment failures immediately.
• Assist with employee performance management, disciplinary actions, and corrective coaching in coordination with management.
• Maintain regular and reliable attendance.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities

• Directly supervises assigned field employees and crew members.
• Provides training, coaching, mentoring, and performance feedback.
• Assists management with employee evaluations, corrective action, and workforce development.
• Promotes a positive, professional, and safety-focused work environment.

Safety Responsibilities

• Comply with and enforce all company safety policies and procedures.
• Ensure compliance with OSHA excavation, trenching, and construction safety requirements.
• Ensure compliance with utility damage prevention requirements, One Call laws, and customer safety standards.
• Conduct and document jobsite safety meetings and hazard assessments.
• Stop work immediately when unsafe conditions exist.
• Ensure all accidents, injuries, near misses, utility strikes, and property damage incidents are reported immediately.
• Participate in incident investigations and corrective action activities.
• Promote and maintain a culture of safety throughout all field operations.

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• Minimum three (3) years of underground utility construction, hydro excavation, or related field experience preferred.
• Previous crew lead, foreman, or supervisory experience preferred.
• Valid driver's license required.
• Valid Class A or Class B CDL preferred or required based on assignment.
• Tanker endorsement preferred or ability to obtain.
• Current DOT Medical Examiner's Certificate if operating CDL-required vehicles.
• Ability to meet company insurability requirements.
• Ability to successfully pass required drug and alcohol testing, background screening, and Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) review.
• Strong leadership, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Extensive knowledge of underground utility construction and hydro excavation practices.
• Knowledge of OSHA excavation and trenching requirements.
• Knowledge of utility damage prevention practices and One Call requirements.
• Ability to safely operate commercial vehicles and heavy equipment.
• Ability to read construction drawings, utility maps, and locate markings.
• Strong leadership, coaching, conflict resolution, and team-building skills.

This position regularly requires the employee to:

• Frequently stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, stoop, climb, and crawl.
• Frequently lift, carry, push, and pull up to 75 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds with assistance.
• Operate commercial vehicles, heavy equipment, and hand tools.
• Climb into and out of trucks and equipment.
• Work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
• Wear required PPE including hard hats, safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, steel-toe boots, high-visibility clothing, and other protective equipment as required.
• Work overtime, weekends, on-call assignments, emergency response situations, and travel as business needs require.

Working Conditions

• Primarily performed outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, snow, wind, and humidity.
• Exposure to dirt, dust, mud, noise, vibration, moving equipment, traffic hazards, and active construction zones.
• Exposure to fuels, oils, lubricants, and other construction-related materials.
• May require travel between jobsites and occasional overnight travel.
