Founded in 2003, We are the largest privately owned wine company in the Northwest.
About this Role:
Precept provides comprehensive administrative and back-office services to a wine importing company operating in the U.S. market. Precept handles all accounting, finance, and operational support while an external team focuses on sales, marketing, and product operations. You will be hired by Precept and work exclusively on the wine importer business, giving you the benefits and infrastructure of a larger organization with the visibility and impact typically found only at smaller companies.
As Senior Accountant, you will be the primary accounting resource for the wine importer, reporting to the Accounting Manager. You will own the month-end close process and be responsible for accurate and timely financial reporting that leadership relies on for decision-making. This role offers significant exposure across the business. You will work directly with sales, marketing, and operations teams, understand the full cycle from purchasing to revenue recognition, and have opportunities to take on analytical projects and present to senior leadership.
Core Accounting Responsibilities (60-70% of role):
- Execute the monthly close process, including account reconciliations, journal entries, and preparation of financial statements
- Analyze account balances and record accruals to ensure proper revenue and expense recognition, including evaluation of estimates for inventory and operational expenses
- Process vendor invoices and manage accounts payable, including initiating payments (both domestic and foreign currency) with Accounting Manager approval
- Monitor accounts receivable aging and work with the Accounting Manager to preserve cash cycle health
- Calculate monthly sales commissions and review bi-weekly payroll reports for accuracy
- Provide cash flow visibility and foreign currency exposure reporting to support treasury decisions
Financial Analysis & Cross-Functional Support (30-40% of role):
- Prepare monthly variance analysis comparing actuals to budget across revenue, margin, and operating expenses
- Support annual budgeting process and provide ad-hoc financial analysis for Sales, Marketing, and Operations teams
- Analyze inventory levels, aging, and costing to support purchasing decisions and identify slow-moving or obsolete stock
- Present financial results and insights to wine importer CEO and senior leadership
- Identify and recommend process improvements to enhance efficiency and profitability
What Success Looks Like:
- Complete and accurate month-end close, including inventory cycle, AP cycle, and financial statement preparation within established timelines
- Clear, actionable variance explanations that help leadership understand performance drivers
- Proactive identification of issues (AP aging, inventory concerns, budget overruns) before they escalate
- Cross-functional partnerships that position finance as a trusted advisor to operational teams
Qualifications:
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting
- 5 years of accounting experience, including responsibility for month-end close and financial statement preparation
- Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, vlookups, financial modeling)
- Strong analytical skills with ability to translate financial data into business insights
- Self-motivated and comfortable working independently with limited direct supervision
- Professional written and verbal communication skills, including ability to present financial information to non-finance stakeholders
Preferred:
- Experience with inventory costing, cost accounting, or inventory management (particularly in distribution, manufacturing, or import businesses)
- Familiarity with foreign currency transactions and multi-currency reporting
- Prior experience with Microsoft Dynamics NAV or similar ERP systems
- Exposure to budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis processes
What We're Looking For:
This role is ideal for someone who wants ownership of the accounting function while gaining exposure to broader financial planning and analysis work. You will work within Precept's established processes and benefits structure while directly supporting focused business operations. This means you get the stability and resources of a larger organization with the autonomy, cross-functional visibility, and direct business impact typically found in smaller companies. You should be comfortable wearing multiple hats, working across departments, and operating with significant independence.
Why This Role:
This position offers a unique combination of depth and breadth that is rare at the senior accountant level. You will not be a cog in a large finance department, you will own the accounting function for the wine importer’s business and have direct visibility into how financial decisions impact operations, sales strategy, and company performance.
You'll gain exposure across the full business cycle: from purchasing and landed cost accounting through inventory management, sales recognition, and financial reporting. This end-to-end understanding accelerates your professional development and positions you for future finance leadership roles.
You'll have room to grow: If you want to take on more, whether that's deeper analytical projects, process automation, system improvements, or strategic initiatives, there are opportunities to expand your scope and contribute beyond traditional accounting work. We value initiative and reward people who bring solutions, not just execute tasks.
You'll work in a hybrid environment: Precept provides the structure, benefits, and resources of an established company, while getting the autonomy, cross-functional collaboration, and direct impact typically found in smaller organizations. You get the best of both.
