Position Summary
The Clinical Instructor supervises, guides, and instructs dental hygiene students in the delivery of patient care within the dental hygiene clinic. Emphasis is placed on the dental hygiene process of care, non-surgical periodontal therapy, and a holistic approach to patient management. The instructor evaluates student performance across all functions within the legal scope of dental hygiene practice in the State of Illinois. The position also involves participation in the development and review of teaching materials, student assessments, and other instructional activities. The instructor is expected to maintain familiarity with the dental hygiene curriculum, including course content, sequence, scope, and standards of practice. This includes reviewing course outlines and syllabi, attending faculty calibration meetings, engaging in professional development, and participating in teaching methodology training related to clinical instruction.

Essential Responsibilities
Instruction & Clinical Supervision
  • Provide clinical instruction that reinforces and complements didactic classroom learning.
  • Supervise and evaluate students’ performance in all aspects of the dental hygiene process of care, including patient assessment, dental hygiene diagnosis, care planning, instrumentation, evaluation of care, and documentation.
  • Instruct and guide students in safe, effective instrumentation and non-surgical periodontal therapy for patients with moderate to advanced periodontal disease.
  • Promote the development of critical thinking, problem-solving, and evidence-based decision-making skills.
  • Deliver instruction during daytime, afternoon, or evening sessions as scheduled each semester.
  • Support a positive, inclusive, and well-equipped learning environment that fosters professional growth and patient-centered care.

Preparation & Curriculum Alignment
  • Review course outlines, syllabi, and instructional materials to ensure alignment with program goals and accreditation standards.
  • Prepare for clinical and lab sessions using department-approved texts, manuals, and teaching resources.
  • Maintain familiarity with course content, sequence, and instructional strategies consistent with program philosophy.
  • Follow established clinical techniques and teaching methodologies as directed by lead faculty. Evaluation & Documentation
  • Evaluate student performance using formative and summative assessments; provide clear, specific, and timely feedback.
  • Record grades and clinical evaluations accurately in the learning management system (D2L) and clinical tracking software.
  • Maintain up-to-date student records and monitor progress, assisting with performance improvement plans as needed.
  • Audit patient records for accuracy and completeness in accordance with program and accreditation requirements.
  • Communicate regularly with full-time faculty regarding student progress, challenges, and outcomes.

Professional Conduct & Accountability
  • Model professionalism and create an environment of respect, integrity, and collaboration.
  • Manage assigned student groups to ensure equitable supervision and consistent instruction.
Uphold program standards of conduct and assume responsibility for student learning outcomes. Arrive on time and remain present for the full duration of each clinic session. Notify the Program Co-Coordinators and lead faculty of any absence, and arrange substitute coverage as needed.
  • Maintain current professional licensure, CPR certification, health clearances, and required documentation.

Collaboration & Professional Development
  • Collaborate effectively with program faculty and staff to enhance the clinical learning experience and support continuous improvement.
  • Participate in faculty calibration meetings, attend course-specific meetings as needed, and are encouraged to engage in student activities such as table clinics and other academic or fundraising events.
  • Engage in continuing education and professional development to maintain current knowledge in dental hygiene practice and educational methodology.
  • Stay informed of CODA standards and maintain compliance with accreditation and institutional requirements.
  • Demonstrate dedication to teaching and mentoring a diverse student population, fostering both academic and clinical excellence

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements

Minimum Qualifications
  • Graduate of a CODA-accredited dental hygiene program with an associate degree or higher.
  • Current, active Illinois Dental License in good standing.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of clinical experience as a Registered Dental Hygienist.
  • Current CPR certification (American Heart Association).
  • Certified in nitrous oxide administration and local anesthesia.
  • Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with instructional technologies, including Microsoft Office Suite or Google Workspace, digital radiography, and practice management/charting software (e.g., Eaglesoft).
  • Ability to establish and maintain professional, cooperative working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and patients.
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check, urine drug screening, and required healthcare immunizations.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in dental hygiene, education, or a related field.
  • Five (5) or more years of clinical dental hygiene experience.
  • Teaching experience at the community college level.
  • Experience using a learning management system (e.g., D2L) and clinical tracking software for evaluations and grade entry.
  • Experience providing clinical instruction to a diverse student population, including both traditional and non-traditional learners.
