What are the responsibilities and job description for the SHIP and Tobacco Program Coordinator position at Prairie Island Indian Community?
SUMMARY:
The SHIP & Tobacco Program Coordinator will be responsible for implementing the workplan set forth in the Statewide Health Improvement Program (SHIP) & Tobacco cessation grants through the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH). The position is responsible for coordinating healthy eating and active living activities for the PIIC community as well as maintaining the tribe's community and medicinal gardens. The coordinator will serve as the tribal representative in correspondence with MDH for all grant reporting.
This position qualifies for a hybrid working arrangement of 1-3 days per week to work away from your assigned work location. This is contingent upon seasonal needs, your supervisors' approval, and the satisfactory completion of a 90-day probationary period.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES:

- Carry out the SHIP & Tobacco grant objectives and workplan according to the established timeline and reporting requirements.
- Coordinate and communicate with PIIC staff, consultants, project partners, and the MDH grants team to complete project goals.
- Coordinate monthly Wicozani Waste (Good Health) Committee meetings to share and receive feedback on healthy living styles within the community that can inform community outreach and events.
- Supervise the tribal garden assistant, volunteers, and interns to support upkeep of the community garden, cultural / medicinal garden, and other harvest locations across PIIC tribal land.
- Ensure equipment maintenance and garden policies and procedures are understood and adhered to by interns and volunteers and provide training when needed.
- Coordinate healthy eating and active living activities such as cooking/preservation classes, traditional tobacco, food sovereignty, etc.
- Coordinate with the PIIC grants manager and finance department to prepare invoices and financial reports for required grant reporting, and ensure the expenditures align with the grant budget.
- Assist with other projects/tasks as needed within the Department.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum of a bachelor's degree in agriculture, biology, public health or related field, or the equivalent working experience in these fields.
- Strong writing and communication skills
Ability to maintain strict standards of confidentiality
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Proficiency in using a computer and common computer software programs (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and Teams)
- Ability to work independently and effectively with minimal supervision
- Ability to work well within the existing team and government structure
- Valid driver's license and proof of insurability
- Sensitive to Native American Culture
- Pass drug screen (UA) and a federal criminal background check in compliance with the Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act and the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act
PREFERRED
- One year of experience in organic gardening, traditional medicines and/or public health
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Must be able to work in and traverse through extreme environments and weather conditions (temp., weather, water, insects, etc.); handle field gear and equipment, occasionally required to lift and carry up to 50 lbs
REQUIRED TRAINING:
- Harassment training
- Any position-related training as determined by department manager
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
- Work is performed in an indoors and outdoors setting and may include exposure to extreme weather
