Job Summary:

The Controls Design Engineer II provides the electrical/controls design on product improvements for electrical/controls infrastructure of our manufactured product lines as well as coordinate site wide drawings as applicable per site/project. These design activities are to provide assurance that our equipment/sites/projects are being built and/or applied per engineering documents, manufacturing and other required standards, such as UL and NEC.  The main goal is the safety, quality, functionality, and overall conformity of our products. This position’s work is generally independent and collaborative in nature. Contributes to moderately complex aspects of a project.

Minimum Qualifications: (Education, Experience, Knowledge, and Skills):

  • Electrical Engineering Degree required
  • 4 years of related experience producing electrical design packages with a focus on industrial controls systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as: construction drawings, single lines, product manuals, control drawings, work instructions, written directions, and markups to electrical/control drawings.
  • Strong analytical, communication and organizational skills with a desire for continuous improvement.
  • Detail-oriented and accurate and a positive can-do attitude.
  • Strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills, including collaborating with other teams.
  • Occasionally required to inspect products in-progress in manufacturing.
  • Proficient with 2-D [AutoDesk] AutoCAD Electrical or equivalent software.
  • Proficient with MS Office applications.
  • Knowledgeable of UL, NEC, and NFPA 79 standards.
  • Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States and should not require now, or in the future, sponsorship for employment visa sponsorship.
  • Candidates must be in a commutable distance to the office in Durham, NC. 

 

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop electrical schematics, control panel layouts, and bills of materials adhering to project technical documentation to produce as-built design package.
  • Using Project Engineering team’s point-to-point lists and markups to create site-wide drawings to capture system connections.
  • Collaborate with other team members to support continuous improvement efforts regarding product design for manufacturing efficiency (DFMA), product development and/or team workflow efficiency.
  • Review EOR or EPC construction drawings to ensure specified product design application compatibility.
  • Confirm and review construction drawings and bring concerns to team lead or Project Engineer in a timely fashion to mitigate any potential delays.
  • Coordinate and communicate with other engineering disciplines, technical project management and other departments to complete project deliverables.
  • Be an active participant in project meetings including handoff, release review, and design meetings as required with the necessary stakeholders.
  • If made aware of long lead material, notify appropriate personnel.
  • Create and verify the BoM (Bill of Materials). Coordinate with the SCADA team to ensure appropriate communication components are ordered. Coordinate with the Systems team to ensure appropriate communication components are ordered. Design is responsible for setting up Vault structure (folders, items, ECOs) and coordinating with manufacturing support.
  • Manage multiple product design lifecycle changes through revision documentation within PDM software to release project deliverables to production.
  • Review and verify drawing packages prior to submittal and release.
  • Design electrical circuits for LV, MV, and DC applications ensuring compliance with PowerSecure design standards and applicable code or project specifications.
  • Review powered electrical components and drawings, including fire alarm drawings and panel schedules.
  • Utilize AutoCAD Electrical, Inventor, Vault and IFS.
  • Work on the electrical/control systems defined in the construction documentation or product specifications for the following.
    • Controllers, PLC, Woodward, HMIs, Switches, Industrial PCs, etc.
    • House Power (breaker panel balance). Transformer, Panel Board, distribution and conduit, receptacles, lights and switches, HVAC, and switchgear heaters.  Interface with switchgear controls, Engine block heaters, alternator strip heaters, Gas Train electrical needs, etc.
    • DC Systems. Station Battery, Racks, consoles, chargers, DC panel Boards and distribution details.
    • Special electrical/control needs such as Comms, gas leak detection, ventilation, fire detection and alarm interface to controls.
    • Develop document set; including BOM, schematics, wire/conduit schedules, and other drawing details that will ensure the safe and efficient installation of this equipment.
  • Identify and execute processes that reduce the overall cost to manufacture, install and operate our products.
  • Occasionally inspect products in manufacturing to troubleshoot discrepancies.
  • Ensure schedules and milestone dates are achieved.
  • Prepare engineering drawings from sketches, verbal descriptions, specifications, and technical information.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • Occasionally assist in moving materials and equipment that weigh ~40 lbs.
  • Occasionally visit manufacturing floor and utilize proper PPE
  • Prolonged sitting with computer usage.
