Position Overview
We are seeking a dynamic, highly driven Director of Business Development to lead growth efforts for a leading integrated infrastructure contractor serving utility and energy clients across North America. This individual will focus on expanding partnerships within transmission, distribution, and substation construction, with a strong emphasis on substation market diversification and strategic T&D client acquisition.
This is a high-impact, revenue-generating role suited for a seasoned BD professional who thrives in a fast-paced, relationship-driven environment. The position begins as an individual contributor with significant opportunity to build and lead a BD team as the company continues its rapid growth.
Strategic Growth & Market Expansion
- Identify, pursue, and secure new business opportunities with electric utilities, EPCs, developers, and large energy clients across North America.
- Lead the diversification strategy for substation construction markets, identifying emerging regions, technologies, and client needs.
- Build a robust pipeline of T&D opportunities aligned with company capabilities and growth goals.
- Conduct market assessments, competitor analysis, and customer mapping to inform strategy.
Client Engagement & Relationship Management
- Develop strong, long-term relationships with key decision-makers at utilities, cooperatives, developers, and energy companies.
- Represent the company at industry events, conferences, and client meetings.
- Deliver compelling presentations, proposals, and value propositions tailored to client needs.
- Maintain consistent communication and follow-through to ensure high-quality client experience.
Proposal & Project Pursuit Execution
- Lead the proposal process, teaming strategies, and bid reviews for targeted pursuit opportunities.
- Partner with operations, estimating, engineering, and executive leadership to develop winning strategies.
- Ensure smooth transition from business development to project execution teams.
Leadership & Internal Collaboration
- Serve as a senior advisor to company leadership on new markets, partnerships, and customer engagement strategies.
- Initially act as a sole contributor, with a future pathway to build and manage a high-performing BD team.
- Champion a culture of accountability, responsiveness, and execution excellence across all BD activities.
- 10 years of business development experience in utility construction, electrical contracting, EPC, or related T&D/substation industries.
- Proven track record of winning major T&D or substation projects with utility clients.
- Strong network and relationships within the North American utility and energy sectors.
- Exceptional presentation, negotiation, and communication skills.
- Ability to travel up to 50% for client meetings, conferences, and field visits.
- Bachelor’s degree preferred—business, engineering, or related field.
- Highly organized, self-driven, and capable of executing complex pursuit strategies with minimal oversight.
