About the Role
A test engineer is responsible for developing and executing testing protocols to ensure the performance, reliability, and safety of machinery and components. They work closely with design, manufacturing, and quality assurance teams to identify test requirements and validate product functionality. The role involves developing and maintaining test procedures to verify that customer and engineering requirements are met. This role also involves setting up and operating test equipment, analyzing data, and documenting results to support product development and regulatory compliance. Test engineers also troubleshoot failures and recommend design or process improvements based on test findings. Strong technical skills, attention to detail, and knowledge of industry standards are essential for success in this position.
Responsibilities
- Develop and implement test plans, procedures, and protocols for industrial machinery and components.
- Set up, operate, and maintain testing equipment and instrumentation.
- Design test systems and fixtures.
- Analyze test data to evaluate product performance, reliability, and compliance with specifications and industry standards.
- Document and communicate test results, including detailed reports and recommendations for design or process improvements.
- Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams to define testing requirements and resolve technical issues.
- Identify root causes of failures through troubleshooting and recommend corrective actions.
- Ensure all testing activities comply with safety and regulatory requirements.
- Participate in product design reviews and provide input on testability and quality assurance.
- Maintain accurate records of tests, procedures, and equipment calibration.
- Continuously improve testing methods and processes for efficiency and accuracy.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Industrial, Electrical, or related field required).
- 0–8 years of experience in a manufacturing or production engineering environment.
Required Skills
- Experience with CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks).
- Strong electrical fundamentals, including the ability to read, interpret, and troubleshoot electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and control diagrams.
- Ability to diagnose system-level failures using data, observation, and logical fault isolation techniques.
- Experience working in a cross-functional environment with Quality, Engineering, Manufacturing, and EHS teams to resolve test and product issues.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
- Strong math and computer skills.
- Uses data and logic to identify root causes and develop effective solutions.
- Approaches complex challenges with a systematic, practical mindset and delivers results.
- Ensures accuracy in documentation, designs, and production analysis.
Preferred Skills
- Familiarity with process improvement methodologies (e.g., Lean, Six Sigma).
- Experience applying formal problem-solving methodologies, such as DMAIC, 8D, or equivalent structured approaches.
- Working knowledge of basic reliability engineering principles, such as:
- Failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA)
- Reliability testing and life testing concepts
- Trend analysis of test failures and field issues
