BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, assist in providing safe transportation for physically and mentally handicapped students; monitor, assist and care for students.REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

Assist in providing safe transportation for physically and mentally handicapped students; assist with the loading and unloading of students; utilize a wheelchair lift as necessary. E

Monitor student behavior; provide assistance to meet the special needs of students; maintain order and discipline among students in accordance with District policies and procedures; assure student understanding of proper bus behavior and emergency procedures. E

Assist students in wheelchairs by loading and securing chairs before departure and assuring students are safely fastened into their seats; secure seat belts, harnesses, tie downs and various adaptive and assistive devices; restrain physically active or aggressive students as needed. E

Provide recreational and educational activities for students; read books to students as appropriate; develop student behavior plans as required. E

Determine appropriate action in potential or real medical emergency situations according to established guidelines; administer first aid to passengers as needed. E

Communicate with teachers, staff and parents concerning student needs, issues and concerns. E

Clean up after students as needed. E

Maintain routine records related to student behavior and assigned activities. E

Perform related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
 
Graduation from high school and demonstrated experience working with children with special needs.
 
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Valid certifications of First Aid, Adult/Child CPR and AED must be obtained within the first six months of employment  or be submitted at the time of application.  Only certifications provided by American Heart Association, American Red Cross or District approved provider for First Aid, Adult/Child CPR and AED will be accepted.  Online certifications will be accepted from these vendors as long as a hands-on skills assessment is completed.  Recertification to maintain current/valid status is a condition of employment.

KNOWLEDGE OF:
Child guidance and motivational principles and practices related to children with special education needs.
Problems and concerns of students with special needs.
Methods and techniques for meeting the special needs of students and responding to behavior issues.
Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
Health, safety, and child abuse regulations.
Oral and written communication skills.
First aid and CPR procedures.
Basic record-keeping techniques.
 
ABILITY TO:
Assist in providing safe transportation for physically and mentally handicapped students.
Demonstrate an understanding, patient and receptive attitude toward special education students.
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with adults and children.
Assist with the loading and unloading of students.
Monitor, observe and control student behavior according to approved policies and procedures.
Understand and relate to children with special needs.
Learn to operate harnesses, tie downs and various adaptive and assistive devices.
Understand and follow oral and written directions.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Observe health and safety regulations.
Maintain routine records related to work performed.
Administer first aid and CPR.

School bus environment.
Seasonal heat and cold or adverse weather conditions.
 
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate safety devices.
Sitting for extended periods of time in restricted space.
Hearing and speaking to exchange information.
Restraining physically active or aggressive students.
Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching to assist students.
Seeing to monitor students and read a variety of materials.
Lifting children as assigned by the position.
 
HAZARDS:
Riding in a vehicle during adverse weather conditions.
Potential exposure to communicable diseases and contact with bodily fluids.
Potential for contact with abusive or physically aggressive student behavior.

In accordance with Personnel Commission Rules and Regulations of Classified Service # 70.200.1, new employees to Poway Unified School District will be placed at Step 1 of the official salary range designated for the position.  Any variances in initial placement are addressed in, and shall be carried out in agreement with, this rule.

Effective July 1, 2020, all new employees to Poway Unified School District will be responsible for the fingerprint fee associated with new employee processing at the cost of $74 - cash/check ($76 for credit cards).
