Description

The current openings are for 3 hours per day/15 hours per week, 9.5 months worked, and are at the following sites:
Sunset Hills Elementary, Adobe Bluffs Elementary, Park Village Elementary, and Design 39 Campus.
These positions provide support at elementary schools.
This is not a benefited position.

Candidates who possess a valid and current CA teaching credential, OR who possess a Bachelor's Degree AND have passed the CBEST
will be placed at Step 6 of the salary range designated for this classification.

Selection Procedure
Applications will be screened, and those candidates whose backgrounds best match the requirements of the position will be invited to participate in a competitive examination process, which may include any combination of the following: Training & Experience evaluation (T&E), multiple-choice question test, job-related performance exercise, and technical/ oral appraisal interview. Examination procedures are subject to change as deemed necessary by the Director of the Personnel Commission.
Candidates who pass all of the examination processes are ranked on an eligibility list according to their score(s). Selection for the position will be made from among the top three (3) ranks of candidates. The eligibility list will be used for hiring purposes in other vacancies in the same, or equivalent, job classification and will be active for six (6) months (Merit Rule 50.100.1).

BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of an assigned supervisor or counselor, perform student support activities to enhance and reinforce behavioral and social skills to students; report sensitive issues; assist students with refusal skills related to alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs; assist students with issues related to bullying, low self-esteem, anger management, decision making, and other matters which prevent full educational potential; provide a variety of clerical and supportive tasks for staff and students.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
The Student Services Assistant performs student support activities to enhance and reinforce behavioral and social skills of students enrolled in an assigned instructional assistance program. The Student Services Specialist performs a variety of paraprofessional duties related to the operation of a school student services center. The Student Services Specialist – Bilingual performs a variety of paraprofessional duties related to the operation of a school student services center for those with limited English or non-English proficiency.

Examples of Duties

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

Assist with the presentation of behavioral learning modules, by tutoring individuals or meeting with small groups of students, and provide encouragement and support. E

Oversee and monitor students during out-of-classroom activities and small group experiences. E

Conduct training meetings with students and reinforce reflective listening skills. E

Present research-based whole class lesson modules on social/emotional, bullying, and prevention skills. E

Notify and consult school counselor and/or administrator regarding cases that may affect the safety, health or welfare of the student. E

Work with school staff to identify and document students for referral to student assistance programs and student and family program participation. E

Assist in the collection and maintenance of evaluation data. E

Assist in the administration of documentation for targeted students. E

Assist the Supervisor/Counselor in organizing program components, creating materials, copying documents, distributing and collecting supplies. E

Perform a variety of clerical work in support of assigned classroom; type and file materials as assigned;

Monitor supply inventory for program activities; inform District office of the need to order materials and equipment in accordance with established limitations. E

Participate in professional development and District/site trainings, when requested. E

Provide general guidance and nurturance to students. E

Perform related duties as assigned.At the end of some of the duty statements, there is an "E"which identifies essential duties required of the classification.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

One year of experience working with children in an organized setting.

In accordance with Personnel Commission Rules and Regulations of Classified Service # 70.200.1, new employees to Poway Unified School District will be placed at Step 1 (Minimum Salary) of the official salary range designated for the position. Any variances in initial placement are addressed in, and shall be carried out in agreement with, this rule.
