**Positions at the following sites work 9.5 months out of the year (summers off), 2-3 hours per day: 
Bernardo Heights Middle School, Black Mountain Middle School, Design 39, Oak Valley Middle, Meadowbrook Middle School, Mesa Verde Middle School, Twin Peaks Middle School**

***Positions at Oak Valley Middle School are 12 months per year, 2-3 hours per day***

Candidates who possess a valid and current CA teaching credential, or have earned a four-year degree AND passed the CBEST 
will be placed at Step 6 of the salary range designated for this classification. 
(You must provide a copy of your current valid CA teaching credential or an official transcript AND proof of passing CBEST)


BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, assist in the overall activities of middle school-aged students in an After School Education & Safety (ASES) program; assist in planning, designing, and leading activities; supervise students in classroom, gym and outdoor activities.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

Assist in the preparation of daily program activities including materials and supplies; lead activities with a group of students; provide a safe, caring, positive and interesting learning environment that supports a high level of student engagement; take attendance and monitor students' whereabouts. Prepare motivating activities focused on building self-confidence, positive social interactions, and team building. E 
 
Serve as a role model and foster positive social-emotional  growth of students; follow school rules, follow established procedures for behavior management using a continuum of intervention strategies; reinforce positive behaviors as appropriate. E 
 
Assure the health and safety of students by following health and safety practices and procedures; assist in maintaining a clean and orderly environment. E 
 
Actively supervise students during academic hour and enrichment activities; encourage students to use active study strategies such as Cornell Notes, flashcards, and graphic organizers; support students in competing homework; use Compass Learning, reference Learning Point, and use resources such as peer tutors. E 
 
 
Assist students with homework completion; explain questions and provide better understanding of homework as needed. E
 
Foster the alignment of ASES with the school day and positively communicate with school staff. .E 
 
Communicate concerns of student behaviors with supervisor and follow through with interventions. E 
 
Be familiar with ASES attendance procedures, PUSD ASES program plan, and ASES grant guidelines. E 
 
Administer first aid and follow necessary safety and emergency procedures; identify and report safety hazards on site or suspected child abuse to appropriate personnel as assigned. E 
 
Escort or communicate via radio students moving to and from classrooms, as assigned. E 
 
Maintain a clean, orderly environment, leaving the area in equal or better condition than before being used. E
 
Assist in the preparation and serving of snacks for students. E
 
 
Attend staff meetings and trainings to facilitate professional development.

Perform related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

One year experience working with students in a school setting or recent volunteer experience in a similar program. 
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Child and adolescent development principles and practices.
Safe practices in academic hour and outdoor activities.
Classroom procedures and appropriate student conduct.
Behavior management and interventions to redirect behavior.
Activities including sports, recreational games, crafts, cooking, geography joust and other academic projects.
Basic record-keeping techniques.
Effective oral and written communication skills with correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.

ABILITY TO:
Assist in the overall activities of the ASES program.
Plan and design activities, including a 4-lesson sequence that builds student skills to mastery
Actively supervise students during program time, including academics, activities, snack, and transition time.
Support students with homework completion and direct them to appropriate resources.
Reinforce positive behaviors and address inappropriate behaviors
Maintain a safe, clean and orderly environment.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Explain rules, regulations, policies, and procedures to students, staff, and parents.
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
Apply behavior management techniques when working with students individually and in groups.
Operate assigned equipment.

Sitting, standing and walking for extended periods of time.
Kneeling, crouching or bending at the waist to assist students.

In accordance with Personnel Commission Rules and Regulations of Classified Service # 70.200.1, new employees to Poway Unified School District will be placed at Step 1 of the official salary range designated for the position.  Any variances in initial placement are addressed in, and shall be carried out in agreement with, this rule.
