Poseidon Aerospace is establishing an advanced composite R&D presence in Maine through partnerships with leading research institutions. We're looking for a part-time engineer to coordinate our Maine composites lab, manage university research partnerships, and serve as the technical bridge between our academic collaborators and San Francisco engineering team.
This is an excellent role for someone who wants meaningful engineering work with flexibility, whether you're an early-career engineer building experience, a graduate student, someone with other commitments, or a professional seeking part-time technical work. You'll have real responsibility coordinating research partnerships and managing technical projects while working a flexible weekly schedule. Responsibilities
Partnership & Research Coordination
- Define and manage technical research partnerships with university partners
- Represent Poseidon in Maine's defense and aerospace community
- Serve as a primary point of contact for university research partners
- Coordinate technical projects with university researchers and track deliverables
- Schedule and attend partnership meetings, facility tours, and technical reviews
- Process invoices, track project budgets, and maintain partnership documentation
- Identify potential research opportunities aligned with Poseidon's needs
- Explore advanced composites manufacturing methods
- Prototype tooling concepts and validate manufacturing approaches
- Investigate process improvements that reduce cost, increase yield, or improve part quality
- Document findings and recommendations for adoption
- Review research outputs and test reports from university partners
- Summarize technical findings for San Francisco engineering team
- Maintain documentation of Maine R&D activities and learnings
- Support remote troubleshooting discussions between university researchers and SF engineers
- Flag promising results that warrant further investigation or adoption
- Maintain Brunswick facility as meeting space for partnerships and intern work
- Coordinate intern hiring, onboarding, and project assignments
- Represent Poseidon at industry meetings and local aerospace events
- Build relationships within Maine's composites and defense manufacturing community
- Support workforce development initiatives with university partners
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Manufacturing, Materials Engineering, or related field (or near completion)
- Understanding of composite materials and manufacturing processes (academic or professional experience)
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- Comfortable coordinating between multiple stakeholders (universities, internal team, vendors)
- Self-directed and reliable—can manage responsibilities independently on flexible schedule
- Based in or willing to relocate to Brunswick/Portland, Maine area
- Any hands-on composites experience (layup, infusion, testing, tooling)
- Previous research coordination, lab management, or project coordination experience
- Interest in aerospace, defense manufacturing, or startup environments
- CAD skills or technical documentation experience
