TITLE: Elementary ESOL Teacher - Rowe Elementary, 26-27 SY

POSITION OVERVIEW: Portland Public Schools seeks an energetic, creative, master teacher of Multilingual Learners (MLs) at Rowe Elementary School for the 2026-2027 school year and beyond. 

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
In Portland Public Schools, ESOL teachers:

• Provide and support rigorous and appropriate instruction aligned with the WIDA English Language Proficiency Standards and the Common Core to meet grade level expectations for MLs including newcomers
• Collaborate and consult with general education teachers to enhance acquisition of English in all language domains necessary to participate and make progress in general education content classes; Grade level and content area focus
• Provide on-going staff development as necessary on language acquisition and acculturation, sheltered instruction, and effective practices in teaching MLs
• Use school and student level data to inform instruction and programming supports for MLs

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
A successful candidate will also have:

• Extensive knowledge and experience with the cultures and languages of our students and families
• Excellent interpersonal skills in order to collaborate effectively with all general education teachers and other educational support staff
• The ability to provide ongoing staff development and leadership as a specialist of language development
• Expertise in building relationships with multilingual families

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: 

To be considered for this position you must currently hold a valid MDOE teacher certificate with ESOL endorsement.

CREDENTIAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Maine State fingerprint (CHRC) authorization (more info)
• Maine State Teacher Certificate with Endorsement 660 (English Language Learner, PK-12 or K-12) (more info)

• Schedule: School Year, Full Time (1.0 FTE)
• Assignment: Permanent
• Reports to: School Principal
• Contract: Part of PEA union (see 2025-2028 CBA here)
• Salary: Based on education and experience, as outlined in CBA

Located in beautiful Portland, ME, Amanda C. Rowe Elementary is a vibrant Pre-K through 5th grade school serving approximately 475 students. Our incredible staff and students make Rowe a truly special place to learn and grow. House in a beautiful, modern facility built in 2018, we provide a welcoming and inclusive environment where every child is supported on their educational journey. 

We are proud to be a diverse learning community, with approximately 21% of our students identifying as multilingual learners. Our robust ESOL team works collaboratively to ensure all students are engaged and successful. Around 20% of our students access special education services, and Rowe is home to the district's specialized Breathe Program which supports students with behavioral and social-emotional needs in meeting their goals at school. Our dedicated special education team and support staff are truly exceptional, providing compassionate, individualized support that helps every student thrive.
