    TITLE:
    Elementary Interventionist (1 Year Only) – Lyseth Elementary


    POSITION OVERVIEW:

    Portland Public Schools is seeking a skilled Interventionist to support students at Lyseth Elementary School for the remainder of the 2025-2026 school year. This teacher will be instrumental in providing targeted intervention, analyzing data and using progress monitoring tools and building relationships. A key component of this role is communicating and collaborating with classroom teachers sharing goals, progress monitoring updates and celebrating progress.

    ** This is 1 Year Only position and will end at the conclusion of the 2025-2026 school year. **

    ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Individualized and Small Group Instruction

    • Build meaningful relationships with students, fostering a positive and supportive learning environment, and addressing individual student needs
    • Deliver direct, explicit reading instruction to students identified as needing additional support in literacy
    • Implement and oversee research-based reading intervention curriculum, and tailor to student needs, with a strong emphasis on the principles of the Science of Reading

    Assessment and Data-Driven Instruction

    • Design and identify evidence-based Tier 1, Tier 2 and Tier 3 intervention for students
    • Administer diagnostic assessments to identify students' specific areas of difficulty and to determine their current reading proficiency levels
    • Document student interventions for internal and external stakeholders (including family caregivers)
    • Regularly monitor and evaluate the reading performance of students, utilizing data to inform instruction and intervention decisions
    • Share trends with school leaders to inform instruction
    • Provide leadership on building RTI/MTSS teams to make data-driven decisions about intervention programming

    Collaboration and Cultural Humility

    • Work with a diverse group of learners, including multilingual students and students with special needs, including dyslexia
    • Communicate and collaborate with classroom teachers sharing literacy goals, progress monitoring updates and celebrating progress
    • Ensure instruction is culturally responsive and meets the needs of all learners

    Professional Development

    • Participate in professional development opportunities to stay informed about best practices in reading instruction, assessment, and intervention strategies
    • Continually seek out and welcome additional learning, feedback from colleagues including the school’s Instructional Coach, and regularly reflect on own practice.

    Family Engagement Relationship Building

    • Communicate regularly with parents or guardians to update them on their child's progress, discuss strategies for support at home, and provide resources as needed
    • Build trust with teachers and administrators

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

    • Equity: Strong equity orientation and an openness to personal reflection on deepening awareness of personal bias and being culturally responsive. Demonstrated conviction around having high expectations for all students, and an asset-based approach. Conviction that all students can read effectively given the right instruction, and a passion to do so. Demonstrated results with teaching multilingual learners and students with disabilities, including dyslexia
    • Content Knowledge: Extensive experience in implementing research-based reading curriculum such as Orton Gillingham or other Science of Reading-based. Expertise in formative, benchmark/interim and summative reading assessment and instruction. Deep understanding of the Science of Reading. Understanding of the intersection of language development and the process of learning to read
    • Teaching: Can effectively teach students math or literacy in Tier 1, 2, and 3 settings aligned to the PPS instructional vision, and rooted in research-based practices. Engages students effectively and has a proven track record of achieving academic results for any learner profile. Strong organizational skills to plan differentiated instruction, track student progress, and follow up with classroom teachers.
    • Relationship Building: Great relationship builder and collaborator. Demonstrated ability to build trust with teachers and administrators. Excellent oral and written communication skills.

    EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE FOR BOTH POSITIONS:

    • Bachelor's degree in an applicable field of education from an accredited college or university; Master’s degree preferred
    • Successful track record as a teacher and/or interventionist
    • Experience designing curriculum and assessment
    • [Preferred] Experience with Illustrative Mathematics Curriculum, Building Fact Fluency, other research-based curricula, CKLA, Expeditionary Learning

    CREDENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

    EMPLOYMENT DETAILS:

    • Full-Time, 1.0 FTE
    • Salaried position, not eligible for overtime
    • Covered under the PEA contract (see 2025-2028 CBA here)

    ABOUT LYSETH:
    As a school community at Lyseth, we work collaboratively to ensure all students feel a sense of belonging and that all students are engaged in grade level learning every day. Each morning, classrooms begin in a circle, running a morning meeting focused on belonging and building social emotional skills. We are committed to teaching explicit and systematic foundational literacy skills in all K-2 classrooms, and additionally, use EL literacy curriculum in all K-5 classrooms. We use Illustrative Mathematics as our math curriculum and student inquiry and engagement is important to our philosophy of teaching and learning. We teach Wabanaki Studies across K-5 and we are working on infusing in Amplify Science Units. We also believe in coaching and supporting teachers and have a literacy and math coach that prioritize time in classrooms with teachers working on Tier 1 instruction.
