Assistant Principal
Department: Berlin Middle High School (BMHS) or Berlin Elementary School (BES)
Reports to: Principal
General Summary
Under the direction of the Principal (and in conjunction with other Assistant Principals where relevant), the Assistant Principal is responsible for:
Assisting in the day-to-day operations of the school.
Supervising and assisting faculty, staff, and the student body.
Supporting and enforcing policies of the Board of Education.
Essential Job Functions
Administrative Leadership: Responsible for the administration of the school in the absence of the Principal.
Policy Enforcement: Enforces the Board of Education's policies.
Safety & Security:
Assists the Principal in maintaining a safe educational environment.
Monitors school buildings and property; coordinates teacher supervision of halls and cafeterias.
Ensures fire drills and emergency response practices are conducted and comply with State regulations.
Student Support & Discipline: * Manages student attendance, behavior problems, and disciplinary records.
Supervises student detention and ensures teacher coverage.
Supervises students during assemblies, in the cafeteria, and at athletic events.
Collaboration: Meets regularly with the Principal to discuss school activities, projects, and plans.
Skills, Experience, & Training Required
Education: Bachelor’s degree and five years of related experience (or an equivalent combination).
Certification: Teaching certification from the State of New Hampshire; must be certified or certifiable as an NH Principal/Administrator.
Technical Knowledge: * Expertise in school administration, district policies, and relevant statutes/regulations.
Working knowledge of modern office procedures, equipment, and computers.
Knowledge of MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports) applied to academics, behavior, and trauma-sensitive approaches.
Professional Skills: * Strong leadership, planning, and organizational skills.
Excellent verbal/written communication and expert listening skills.
Ability to resolve complex problems and develop alternatives.
Supervisory Responsibility
Supervises Office Management Staff and may supervise Teacher Leaders, Custodial Staff, Educational Support Staff, and Busing Staff. Responsibilities include:
Interviewing and recommending the selection of employees.
Planning, assigning, and directing work.
Appraising performance and managing employee recognition or discipline.
Addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Other Duties
Attends School Board meetings.
Maintains professional growth by attending meetings, reading journals, and collaborating with peers.
Performs other related duties as required.
