What are the responsibilities and job description for the Commercial Debt Negotiator / Claims Resolution Specialist position at Porter, Teece & Boyd?
Porter, Teece & Boyd
Independent Contractor | Commission Only
You know how collectors pursue a claim. Use that experience to help the business facing it.
Porter, Teece & Boyd represents businesses being pursued by commercial creditors and collection agencies. We review claims, audit collection activity, and negotiate reduced balances or more favorable payment arrangements. When legal advice or litigation is needed, we help clients coordinate with outside counsel.
We’re seeking an experienced commercial collector, claims adjuster, or settlement negotiator to take ownership of assigned claims from initial review through resolution.
What you’ll do
- Review contracts, invoices, account statements, and collection correspondence.
- Identify missing documentation, disputed charges, balance discrepancies, and collection conduct requiring further review.
- Build clear factual summaries and organize supporting evidence.
- Obtain necessary information from clients and keep them informed.
- Negotiate with creditors, collection agencies, and their representatives within client-approved authority.
- Present settlement offers and payment arrangements for client approval.
- Maintain accurate records of communications, deadlines, offers, and approvals.
- Coordinate documentation for outside counsel when appropriate.
- Follow assigned matters through resolution.
Who we’re looking for
You have experience in commercial collections, claims adjusting, settlement negotiation, or commercial account disputes.
Former commercial collectors are especially encouraged to apply. Your understanding of recovery strategies, settlement authority, documentation, and account economics is directly relevant to this work.
Claims adjusters with strong investigation and negotiation experience are also encouraged to apply.
You should be able to:
- Evaluate an unfamiliar file and identify what needs further investigation.
- Negotiate confidently and professionally under pressure.
- Distinguish documented facts from unsupported assertions.
- Write clear correspondence and maintain organized files.
- Independently manage multiple matters and follow through.
- Recognize when a matter requires escalation to licensed counsel.
Compensation
This is a commission-only independent contractor opportunity, with no base salary or hourly wage.
For claims you handle, the commission structure is:
- 20% of PTB’s audit fees actually collected.
- 15% of PTB’s savings-based performance fees actually collected.
- 15% of PTB’s terms-only resolution fees actually collected.
Commissions are calculated on PTB’s collected fees—not the client’s original debt balance or total savings
and are paid after PTB collects. Refunds, reversals, and uncollected invoices do not generate commission.
Illustrative compensation example
For a $100,000 claim resolved for $60,000:
- Client savings: $40,000.
- PTB audit fee: $3,500 → your commission: $700.
- PTB performance fee: 20% of savings, or $8,000 → your commission: $1,200.
- Total commission: $1,900, assuming those fees are fully collected.
This example illustrates the calculation; it is not a guarantee of earnings, claim volume, or settlement results.
Why PTB?
Your experience can help business owners facing collection pressure understand their position and pursue a practical resolution.
You’ll work directly with the founder, manage substantive negotiations, and help develop the firm’s claim-review and resolution processes as PTB grows.
The role focuses on factual review, claim management, and commercial negotiation. Legal advice and litigation are handled by licensed counsel.
How to apply
Submit your résumé and brief answers to the following:
- What types of commercial accounts or claims have you handled?
- What was the typical balance range?
- Describe a difficult negotiation you personally handled and its outcome.
- Are you comfortable with a commission-only independent contractor arrangement?
Please exclude confidential information about former clients or employers.
