What are the responsibilities and job description for the STORES WORKER (PART-TIME) position at Polk County?

Under immediate supervision, performs manual labor and routine clerical record-keeping tasks in the ordering, receipt, storage, and distribution of materials, equipment, and supplies in and out of the supply/receiving area. Maintains the day-to-day operations of the store; fills and distributes customer supply orders; maintains inventory and accounting records; processes requests for replenishing stock. Depending on departmental assignment, workers may be assigned to stores, receiving and supply, and/or mail operations.  
  1. Receives, stores, and distributes materials, equipment, and supplies, prepares items and parcels for shipping, loads and unloads materials from pallets, trays, racks, and shelves; moves material manually and by use of forklift, hand trucks, or other material handling equipment; opens containers using hand tools.
  2. Unpacks and examines incoming shipments for quantity, quality, and damage; determines whether orders have been filled correctly by verifying incoming shipments against the original order and accompanying bill of lading, invoice, or packing slips; records discrepancies and/or damages; contacts the buyer to rectify discrepancies; processes bills, prepares paperwork for payment after confirming receipt of proper shipment.
  3. Sorts and places supplies on racks, shelves, or in bins; ensures items are stored properly; reads schedules, work orders, shipping orders, or requisitions to determine items to be moved, gathered, and/or distributed; coordinates with departmental staff on delivery schedules and work orders; routes/transports shipments to proper stockroom. 
  4. Loads and unloads delivery van; secures materials to prevent damage in transport to work sites; may operate county vehicles to deliver materials and supplies throughout Polk County.
  5. Compiles and maintains records of quantity, cost, and type of materials and supplies received, stocked and issued; compiles stock records; prepares and maintains  inventory records; enters data in computerized inventory software system; prepares invoices.
  6. Fills requisitions and orders from store stock; assembles orders; examines stock to verify conformance to specifications and/or requisitions; places material on pallets for delivery; periodically takes a physical count of stock on hand and reconciles with inventory records; initiates purchasing requests for replenishment of stock; rotates and/or rearranges stock.
  7. May assemble office furniture received such as chairs, desks prior to delivery to work site; follows assembly instructions; assembles items using hand tools including pliers, wrenches, screwdrivers, and hammers; may assist in assembly of larger items at the work site.
  8. Sorts and delivers U.S. and intradepartmental mail for all County offices; picks up and delivers mail from and to the U.S. Post Office; processes all outgoing mail by sorting and applying correct postage.
  9. Participates in bulk mailings to support various county operations.
  10. Maintains security and cleanliness of work area.
  11. Performs related duties as assigned.
  • Knowledge of storekeeping and supply room methods and procedures.
  • Knowledge of supply inventory and record-keeping procedures. 
  • Knowledge of U.S. postal regulations.
  • Ability to distinguish numbers to sort by zip codes.
  • Ability to perform record-keeping requiring close attention to detail.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written directions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to safely operate van, forklifts, hand jacks, and other material handling equipment.
  • Ability to keep accurate manual and computerized records, perform basic arithmetic, and perform data entry. Ability to effectively use the County’s inventory software system.
  • Ability to perform prolonged physical labor.
  • Ability to lift and move supplies and materials weighing up to 60 pounds.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, twist, and reach repeatedly to unpack, unload, and stock materials and supplies.
  • Ability to assemble furniture in accordance with written assembly instructions.
  • Ability to use hand tools. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, vendors, suppliers, and the general public, fostering a collaborative and professional work environment.
  • Ability to successfully complete training requirements. 
  • Graduation from high school or equivalent, and
  • One year of experience in stores, supply, warehousing, inventory, or related field, or 
  • Any equivalent combination of training and experience that will have provided the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Special Requirements
  • Depending on assignment, candidate may be required to obtain CPR/AED and First Aid certification within six months to one year of hire and maintain annually.
  • Candidate must pass a post-employment offer physical examination and physical capacity testing to ensure candidate meets the essential physical requirements of the position.
  • Depending on assignment, candidate may be required to pass a tuberculosis test annually.
  • Certification in the operation of forklifts is required within six months of employment. 
  • A drug screen is required prior to final offer of employment.
  • A criminal background check is required.
  • A valid State of Iowa driver’s license is required.

Salary listed is as of July 1, 2026. This position is not benefits eligible.
