The Polk County Highway Department is hiring Summer Seasonal Workers!
Enjoy a schedule of up to 40 hours per week, working four 10-hour days — no nights or weekends. Spend your summer working outdoors!
Under the direct supervision of the work unit supervisor, the Seasonal Laborer operates motorized equipment used for road construction and assists with the repair and maintenance of County roadways. Duties include traffic control, flagging operations, and a combination of physical labor and basic vehicle/equipment operation.

Essential Duties:
The following are examples of duties that may be performed.
- Traffic control and flagging operations
- Operate mowers, trimmers, tractors and attachments, and related grounds and roadway maintenance equipment
- County roadway, or trail construction, repair and maintenance including brushing, grading, mowing and other related activities
- Minor carpentry and masonry work, as well as minor repairs to equipment as needed
- Perform preventative maintenance in other areas as directed
- Complete necessary paperwork related to work activities
- Participate as a team member to improve efficiency and cooperatively solve problems
- Duties may vary based on operational needs of the work unit.

Education/Experience:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Working knowledge and skills to properly and safely operate motorized equipment.
- Training, experience, or coursework in equipment operation, maintenance, or a related field preferred.
- Experience operating power grounds-care equipment such as mowers, trimmers, tractors, and attachments.
- Knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment.
Preferred Skills:
- Ability to perform safe and effective traffic control and flagging operations.
- Ability to complete roadway and trail maintenance tasks such as brushing, grading, mowing, etc.
- Ability to follow safety procedures and use required personal protective equipment.
- Ability to work outdoors in seasonal temperature extremes, wet or humid conditions, uneven ground, slopes, and ditches.
- Ability to accurately complete necessary paperwork and support efficient team operations.
- Work as a team member to improve efficiency and solve problems cooperatively.
- Ability to sit, walk, stand, use hands, reach, climb, balance, stoop, bend, kneel, talk, hear, and smell.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 60 lbs., and occasionally lift/move up to 100 lbs.
- Required vision abilities include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
