Polaris Engineering Group, PLLC
Location: Pflugerville / North Austin, TX (on-site; hands-on shop work required)
Type: 1099 Contractor (part-time or full-time based on workload) with a clear path to W-2
Start: As soon as available
Pay: Competitive hourly (1099), based on experience and capability
Who we arePolaris Engineering Group supports energy and industrial clients with practical, buildable engineering. We operate with integrity, collaboration, and dependability—and we take pride in being the team that gets it right the first time. Our work lives in the real world: equipment, fabrication, field conditions, and schedules that matter. If you like creating drawings that actually get built, you’ll fit in here.
The roleWe’re hiring a Mechanical CAD Drafter who’s comfortable in the shop, measuring real equipment and translating it into accurate models and clean manufacturing drawings. This is not a “sit behind a screen” drafting role—hands-on verification is part of the job. You’ll work closely with engineering and fabricators to deliver clear documentation that supports quality builds and reduces rework.
What you’ll do- Create and revise 3D models and 2D drawings for mechanical components and assemblies
- Spend time in the shop taking measurements, documenting equipment, and confirming fit/function
- Produce manufacturing-ready prints (dimensions, tolerances, hole callouts, weld symbols; basic GD&T as needed)
- Build and maintain BOMs, cut lists, and part/assembly documentation
- Support engineering with redlines, as-builts, and drawing package updates
- Collaborate with shop leads/fabricators to improve build clarity, consistency, and speed
Required
- Mechanical drafting experience with fabrication/assembly exposure
- Comfortable working on-site in a shop environment (PPE, measuring, documenting, verifying)
- Ability to create drawings that are clear, consistent, and buildable
- Strong attention to detail, file organization, and revision control
- Located in (or able to commute to) the Pflugerville, TX area
Preferred
- SolidWorks experience (preferred)
- Experience with weldments, structural frames, skids, brackets, or industrial equipment
- Familiarity with fit-ups, tolerances, and fabrication constraints
- Experience creating as-built drawings from shop/field measurement
- Ability to work independently and communicate clearly when details are missing
- We value quality and clarity over flashy models
- We communicate early and often to avoid rework
- We respect the shop floor—our drawings should make their job easier
- We stay flexible and focused on solutions, not excuses
This is a 1099 role initially, with the intention to move the right person into a W-2 position as workload and fit are proven.
