Industrial Arts Teacher (ANTICIPATED)
Position Overview
Start Date: August 2026 (2026-2027 School Year and beyond)

Grade Level: 9-12
Reports To: Principal
Position Summary
We are seeking an enthusiastic and skilled high school Industrial Arts teacher to inspire students and foster hands-on technical understanding. The ideal candidate will create engaging, project-based learning experiences that prepare students for college, career, and lifelong technical problem-solving while building confidence and practical skill fluency.
Essential Responsibilities
Instruction & Curriculum
- Plan and deliver standards-based instruction aligned with Iowa state standards and industry-recognized technical education frameworks
- Teach courses that may include Woods Technology, Metals/Welding, Drafting & CAD, Power & Energy Systems, Construction Technology, or other applied technical courses
- Develop coherent lessons that build conceptual understanding, technical skill, and real-world application
- Integrate multiple instructional approaches (design thinking, project-based learning, technical reading, and hands-on fabrication) to deepen student comprehension
- Utilize diverse instructional strategies including direct instruction, collaborative projects, inquiry-based activities, and technical problem-solving tasks
- Incorporate technology tools (CAD software, digital fabrication equipment, measurement tools, industry-standard machinery) to enhance learning
- Design and implement formative and summative assessments that measure student skill development and growth
Differentiation & Student Support
- Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of learners at various skill levels, from beginners to advanced students
- Provide additional support through one-on-one guidance, skill remediation, and targeted intervention strategies
- Challenge advanced students with enrichment opportunities, leadership roles, and accelerated project work
- Implement accommodations and modifications for students with IEPs and 504 plans
- Foster a growth mindset and technical confidence in all students
- Use performance data and project outcomes to identify student needs and adjust instruction accordingly
Classroom & Shop Management & Culture
- Establish and maintain a positive, respectful, and safe shop/classroom environment conducive to learning
- Enforce all safety protocols, procedures, and regulations governing the use of tools and equipment
- Implement effective classroom management strategies that maximize instructional and project time
- Create a culture where mistakes are valued as learning opportunities and craftsmanship is celebrated
- Encourage technical problem-solving, creative thinking, and precision
- Promote persistence, attention to detail, and professional work habits
Communication & Collaboration
- Communicate regularly with students and families regarding academic progress, project expectations, and safety requirements
- Collaborate with CTE and elective department colleagues to ensure curriculum alignment and instructional coherence
- Work with guidance counselors to support appropriate student course placement and career pathway exploration
- Coordinate with special education staff to support students with diverse learning needs
Professional Responsibilities
- Maintain accurate records of student attendance, grades, and assessment data
- Maintain shop inventory, equipment maintenance logs, and safety inspection records
- Participate in department meetings, faculty meetings, and professional development sessions
- Stay current with best practices in technical education, industry trends, and emerging technologies
- Contribute to school-wide committees, initiatives, and improvement efforts
- Supervise students during assigned duties (hallway, lunch, study hall, etc.)
- Participate in parent-teacher conferences, open houses, and school events
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Industrial Technology, Technology Education, or related field
- Valid Iowa state teaching license/certification in Industrial Arts/Technology Education (or eligibility to obtain)
- Strong content knowledge across high school industrial arts and technical education curriculum
- Understanding of current CTE teaching methodologies and project-based pedagogical practices
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills
- Commitment to equity and access in technical education
- Demonstrated knowledge of shop safety standards and best practices

- Deep understanding of technical concepts, tools, materials, and processes across the industrial arts curriculum
- Ability to demonstrate and explain complex technical skills clearly and safely
- Skilled in creating engaging, project-based tasks that promote critical thinking and craftsmanship

- Excellent safety awareness and ability to enforce a culture of safe practice
