Responsibilities
The Closer / Support Teacher plays an essential role in supporting classrooms and ensuring a smooth end to the day at the childcare center. This position provides afternoon coverage, assists teachers during family pick-up, helps maintain a safe and positive environment, and contributes to closing and cleaning responsibilities.
This is a part-time position, scheduled from mid afternoon to 6:15 PM, ideal for individuals who enjoy working with children and want a flexible after-school role.
Duties
This description outlines the primary responsibilities of the Closer / Support Teacher but is not all-inclusive. Duties may be adjusted to meet the needs of the children, families, and program.
- Support Lead and Assistant Teachers in classrooms during the late afternoon and dismissal period.
- Supervise children during free play, group activities, outdoor time, and transitions.
- Assist with greeting parents and guardians at pick-up, maintaining a warm and professional presence.
- Help manage children’s belongings and ensure smooth transitions between classroom activities and dismissal.
- Step into classrooms when needed to maintain required teacher-to-child ratios.
- Support teachers by preparing the classroom for the next day (tidying, sanitizing toys, restocking supplies).
- Assist with cleaning responsibilities at the end of the day, including wiping tables, organizing materials, and sanitizing high-touch areas.
- Ensure safety and supervision of children at all times, especially during busy dismissal periods.
- Collaborate with staff to complete closing checklists and lock-up procedures as directed by the Director or Lead Teachers.
- Maintain positive, professional communication with families and staff.
Qualifications
- MERIT Profile Registered
- Minimum Age: 16 years
- Experience: no experience required but preferred.
- Education: High school diploma, GED, or enrolled.
- Continuing education is required. Area of studying is flexible.
- → PELC highly encourages their floater/support teacher to take a minimum of one class per quarter to complete their Associate Degree in ECE.
- Approved alternative qualifications
- Certifications: Current CPR/First Aid, Food Handler’s Permit, 30 Hours STARS* ,and state-required training (Safe Sleep, Mandated Reporter).
- Warm, caring personality with a passion for working with children.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and engage in floor-level activities.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
* Or education per DCYF that qualifies for 30-Hour STARS training exemption.
Work Schedule
- Part-time, Monday–Friday.
- 2h, 2.5h, 3h, 3.5, 4h shift
- Occasional evenings or weekends for events or training.
