What are the responsibilities and job description for the Growth Engineer (Growth Lead) position at PlantPaper?
Growth Engineer (Growth Lead)
About the Role
PlantPaper is a fast-growing, subscription-driven consumer brand built by a very small team doing an outsized amount of work. We are obsessive about performance, allergic to bloat, and deeply skeptical of generic marketing playbooks.
We’re looking for a Growth Engineer—someone with a scientist’s mindset and a generalist’s range—to take real ownership of growth across acquisition, monetization, and retention. This is a hands-on, in-the-trenches role with meaningful responsibility and real upside.
What this role is not:
a brand marketing role
a lifecycle-only role
a “manage agencies and make decks” role
This is a role for someone who wants to understand the mechanics of the growth system—and then do the work required to improve them.
What You’ll Own:
Growth, End to End
You will be responsible for identifying, testing, and scaling growth opportunities across the business, from new customer acquisition to lifetime value optimization.
That includes:
New customer acquisition
- Owning and improving existing acquisition channels (Meta, Google, affiliates, direct mail), not by replacing founder-led creative, but by increasing surface area — unlocking additional formats, partners, and testing volume that compound what’s already working
- Identifying, testing, and validating new channels and tactics (e.g. TikTok, whitelisted ads, emerging formats, partnerships, underpriced surfaces)
- Moving fast enough that within 60–90 days, at least one new acquisition surface has been meaningfully validated or ruled out
Lifecycle & LTV growth
- Treating retention, subscription conversion, and monetization as core growth levers
- Building and executing an opinionated, 6-month plan to improve LTV
- Designing and overseeing lifecycle experimentation across email, SMS, the subscriber portal, and pricing/discount structures
- Rejecting generic CRM playbooks in favor of what actually makes PlantPaper unique
Experimentation & optimization
- Designing rigorous A/B tests across the website, checkout, and subscriber experience
- Defining hypotheses, success metrics, and learning goals
- Ensuring experiments are well-designed, well-executed, and actually acted on
Data & insight
- Personally digging into data (GA, RetentionX, internal reporting)
- Reorganizing and interrogating data to surface insights others miss
- Translating analysis into clear decisions and next actions
How You’ll Work
- You will work inside a small, elite internal team supported by best-in-class external partners.
- You will manage agencies aggressively:
- set clear expectations
- give them a short leash to improve
- move on quickly if they don’t deliver
- You will step in yourself when needed to keep momentum.
- You will be accountable for outcomes, not activity.
This role rewards:
- judgment over templates
- speed of learning over false certainty
- rigor
- people who figure out how to get it done
What Success Looks Like (First 60–90 Days)
Within your first 2–3 months, you should have:
- Taken real ownership of new channels and partners
- Cracked at least one new growth opportunity or reached a clear, defensible conclusion about why it won’t work — and what to try next
- Built and begun executing:
- a concrete LTV / lifecycle testing roadmap
- a real website experimentation cadence
- Established clear answers across the growth system — which channels, tactics, and lifecycle levers are working, which aren’t, and what to do next — even if not all results are fully in yet
Who This Role Is For
You are likely a strong fit if you:
- Have 3–5 years of experience in growth, performance marketing, or experimentation
- Have worked in a subscription or recurring-revenue business
- (If you’ve never worked on a subscription or recurring-revenue business, this role is probably not a fit.)
- Are deeply quantitative and comfortable living in data
- Think in hypotheses, mechanisms, and feedback loops
- Can zoom out to see the whole system — and zoom in to fix specific problems
- Are hungry, opinionated, and eager to prove yourself
- Can manage agencies and external partners with confidence and clarity
Who This Role Is Not For
This role is not a fit if you:
- Rely on generic growth or lifecycle playbooks
- Want a narrow channel-specialist role
- Need lots of structure, process, or consensus to move
- Are looking for a low-ownership, low-accountability seat
Compensation & Upside
- Competitive manager-level base compensation
- Meaningful performance-based upside, tied to real growth outcomes
- Equity / options available for the right person
- This role is designed for someone who wants to earn more by delivering more
Why This Role Exists
PlantPaper is at a stage where:
- growth opportunities are abundant,
- the data is rich,
- and the leverage is real.
What we need is someone with the curiosity, discipline, and hunger to turn that into durable growth — without bloating the team or lowering the bar.
If that excites you, we’d love to talk.
Salary : $120,000 - $180,000
