Position Summary

The Router/Dispatcher is the operational control point for fuel delivery execution, responsible for building safe, efficient, and cost-effective routes for residential keep-fill and will-call, commercial, and industrial accounts. This role uses tank-monitoring data, degree-day and usage forecasts, and real-time field communication to sequence deliveries, assign drivers and vehicles, and keep the delivery day on track. The Router/Dispatcher serves as the primary communication link among drivers, customer care, sales, and field operations, and is responsible for adapting routes in real time in response to weather, road conditions, equipment issues, and emergency or no-heat calls. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, a strong cross-functional communicator, decisive under pressure, and comfortable using routing, dispatch, and tank-monitoring technology to keep deliveries safe, on time, and cost-effective.

Key Areas of Ownership

  • Daily route build and stop sequencing for all trucks and drivers on shift
  • Real-time re-routing decisions in response to weather, breakdowns, or emergency/no-heat calls
  • Driver-to-route assignments for the shift
  • Prioritization of will-call, keep-fill, and emergency deliveries within the delivery day
  • Route reviews and delivery-exception documentation
  • Daily hours-of-service (HOS) and route-feasibility check prior to dispatching drivers

Key Areas of Responsibility

  • Strong cross-functional communication across the organization with Commercial, Operations and Finance stakeholders
  • Keep-fill scheduling accuracy (tank telemetry, K-factor/degree-day calculations) – shared with Customer Care, which manages will-call orders
  • Route efficiency metrics (route adherence, gallons per mile) – reported to the Operations Manager
  • Delivery-window commitments for commercial and industrial accounts – coordinated with Industrial and Commercial Regional Account Management
  • Seasonal, peak-season capacity planning input – shared with the Operations Manager and Territory Director
  • Daily monitoring & upkeep of routing/dispatch software and tank-monitoring platform

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; coursework in logistics, supply chain, or transportation a plus.
  • 3 years of dispatch, routing, or logistics coordination experience; propane, fuel distribution, or bulk delivery experience strongly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of DOT hours-of-service rules and fuel/hazmat distribution regulations.
  • Proficiency with routing/dispatch software, tank-monitoring platforms, and Microsoft Office, especially Excel.
  • Strong multitasking, communication, and problem-solving skills in a fast-paced, safety-sensitive environment.
  • Availability for extended or non-standard hours during peak heating season, severe weather events, and on-call emergency coverage.
  • Strong experience using AI-enabled support tools.

Key Performance Indicators

  • On-time delivery percentage
  • Out-of-gas/no-heat incident rate
  • Gallons delivered per mile
  • Will-call vs. keep-fill delivery ratio
  • Driver hours-of-service compliance rate

Safety Responsibilities

The Router/Dispatcher is responsible for supporting routing and delivery activities in accordance with company safety policies, DOT regulations, FMCSA requirements, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations.

The position reinforces safe driving practices, regulatory compliance, and operational risk management, and partners with Safety and Operations leadership to investigate and address safety-related concerns.

Work Environment

Primarily an office/dispatch-center environment with frequent phone and electronic communication with drivers in the field. Requires flexibility for early morning, evening, weekend, and on-call availability during winter peak season and severe weather events.
