Job Description: 7 - 12 School Counselor

Reports to: Assistant Head of School

Summary Description

The 7-12 School Counselor will work in collaboration with the K- School Counselor to oversee a comprehensive, developmentally appropriate K–12 counseling program and leadership / SEL curriculum. Both counselors play a crucial role in promoting the academic, social-emotional, and personal growth of students by guiding program development, leading lessons and activities, offering direct student support, and collaborating closely with faculty, administration, and families.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Program Co-Leadership

• Co-lead and continuously refine a comprehensive K–12 counseling program aligned with ASCA (American School Counselor Association) standards and The Pine School’s mission and values.
• Oversee the implementation and development of schoolwide character education and social-emotional learning initiatives (currently Leader in Me)
• Support advisors and model instruction for The Pine School’s advisory program in grade 7 to 12. 
• Champion initiatives that promote a safe, inclusive, and respectful school climate, enhancing student well-being and school culture.

Student Counseling & Support Services

• Provide short-term, goal-oriented counseling to students in grades 7–12 through individual and small-group sessions.
• Deliver responsive services to support students' academic performance, emotional health, and social development.
• Develop and coordinate student-focused programs and assemblies on topics related to mental health and overall wellness.
• Ensure staff compliance with mandatory reporting protocols, including training and procedures related to suspected abuse.
• Implement safety and intervention protocols for students at risk of self-harm or harm to others.
• Manage referrals to external mental health professionals and collaborate with community-based services as needed.
• Work closely with outside providers to support continuity of care and integrated student support.

Communication & Engagement

• Serve as a key liaison to families, providing clear, compassionate communication regarding student concerns.
• Organize parent programs and faculty professional development as part of program implementation and student support
• Attend school events, off-campus education, etc. so as to aid in establishing connection and rapport with multiple constituencies. 

Qualification Requirements

• Master’s degree in School Counseling or a related field
• State or national certification/licensure in school counseling or a related field
• Significant experience in school counseling
• Proven success connecting with and supporting adolescents
• Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Prolonged periods standing or  sitting at a desk and working on a computer. 
• Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
• Ability to move files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand as necessary.
