Groundskeeper

Summary
The Groundskeeper operates a variety of light, medium, and heavy equipment to perform routine established tasks such as mowing, repairing airstrips, and performing other landscaping tasks. This role also performs minor maintenance and servicing of equipment used. Work is performed under the immediate supervision of the Airfield Maintenance Supervisor and is evaluated through observation and inspection of work for adherence to established work standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Operate large, motorized equipment such as large tractor mowers, slope mowers, weed eaters, backhoe, snow blowers, street sweepers, sidewalk sweepers, loaders, woodchipper, and dump trucks
• Wash and clean equipment; perform routine service such as checking fluid levels and tire pressure
• Plant trees, shrubs, and grass; fertilize, water, mulch, trim, and perform other general landscape maintenance tasks
• Patch asphalt and/or concrete strips and other roadway areas
• Clear fence line, pesticide application
• Take part in snow removal operations
• Other duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Experience operating motorized equipment of various types and sizes
• Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and fit-for-duty examination
• Hold and maintain valid U.S. driver's license with 3 years of verifiable driving history

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Ability to operate and service motorized equipment of various types and sizes
• Ability to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner; gather and analyze information skillfully; develop alternative solutions; work well in group problem-solving situations
• Working knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary to operate large equipment
• Some knowledge of landscaping methods and procedures
• Ability to operate a two-way radio, computer, and cell phone
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
• Ability to communicate courteously with the public, coworkers, and supervisors

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Prior experience in a lead worker or supervisory position
• Hold a valid NC Pesticide Application License or obtain one within a reasonable timeline as determined by the Airfield Maintenance Supervisor

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

• This position requires a variety of ranges of motion such as sitting, climbing, walking, standing, pulling, crouching, and other repetitive motions when performing tasks and for long periods of time
• Adequate vision, hearing, range of motion, and speech required
• Ability to operate in an environment with frequent interruptions from people and or noises, which in return could result in some level of stress, fatigue, or strain
• Ability to operate outdoors in all seasons, including extreme temperatures 
• Ability to work at heights sometimes exceeding 40 feet
• Ability to lift 40 lbs
