JOB SUMMARY:
This is a supervisory position responsible for the hiring, evaluation, and training of grounds employees. Coordinates work processed with the others to ensure effective and complete supervision of grounds staff across the District. Responsible for planning, developing, implementing and conducting training and safety programs to ensure grounds staff maintain compliance with District policy and procedures, local, state, and federal standards.
Working under the limited supervision and general direction of the Executive Director of Operations, the Grounds Coordinator has oversight of the grounds services across the district to include: supervision, overseeing the repair of grounds equipment, approving the purchase of grounds supplies and equipment, scheduling projects, overseeing maintenance performed by grounds staff for all district locations. Supervisory functions include performance management, evaluation, discipline, assisting and hiring and discharge decisions, coordination of others’ work, and exercising functional and technical supervision over personnel in the grounds trade to ensure compliance with standards and measured results.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- In conjunction with site leadership, responsible for the recruitment, selection, supervision, and training of grounds staff within the district.
- Ensures efficiency of assigned staff to maintain high standards of cleanliness of school sites, grounds equipment and fleet vehicles.
- Conduct regular inspections and observations of school sites and playground equipment.
- Monitor employee performance, address performance concerns, and participate in annual employee evaluations as needed.
- Works with leaders across the district in processing cases of employee discipline.
- Respond to after- hours emergencies to ensure appropriate response and resolution;coordinate proper response by maintenance and/or grounds staff, including notification of administrative staff.
- Evaluates products and equipment.
- Implements and evaluates the grounds department safety program.
- Comply with District Policies.
- Ensures all fleet vehicles are kept up to date on all maintenance requirements.
- Works with vendors on purchasing fleet vehicles, grounds equipment, and playgrounds.
- Works with site leadership to design and implement new playground equipment.
- Such other related job duties as assigned by the supervisor(s).
JOB REQUIREMENTS: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Increasingly responsible experience in skilled grounds and maintenance work, including five years of supervisory or lead responsibility. Prior grounds supervision, preferably in a school setting or multi-site public environment preferred.
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include:
- Thorough knowledge of institutional groundskeeping in a large, multiple facility organization.
- Knowledge of and ability to use equipment and supplies used in care of grounds and equipment.
- Knowledge of safety standards, rules and regulations relating to grounds operations in school facilities.
- Knowledge and skills in hiring, supervising and evaluating staff.
- Skill and ability to communicate both verbally and in writing with all individuals in a professional and courteous manner.
- Ability to initiate and implement industrial safety procedures.
- Ability to assess grounds service requirements of multiple facilities and schedule staff efficiently to meet grounds needs.
- Ability to exercise discretion and maintain trust and confidentiality.
- Ability to develop positive, amenable relationships with staff, students, and public
- Ability to perform professionally while under pressure and tight timelines.
- Skill and ability to follow and give written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to successfully utilize and operate a variety of job-related equipment such as computer, telephone, copier, etc.
- Ability to operate basic computer systems including flexibility in meeting deadlines and work additional hours that may include nights and/ or weekends.
- Ability to perform physical work both indoors and outdoors to include walking, standing, bending, and lifting.
- Possess strong organizational skills and the ability to work as a team as well as independently.
- Ability to communicate effectively.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
- At least five years of experience in grounds maintenance. Background to include experience with and knowledge of grounds processes, equipment and materials.
- Possess a valid South Carolina driver’s license.
PREFERRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree or higher
- Experience in lead or supervisory capacity
