Campus Statement


Phoenix College (PC), the first public junior college in Arizona, welcomed its first students on September 13, 1920. In 1962, PC transitioned to a community college that is part of the Maricopa Community College District. Currently, PC serves an ethnically-diverse student population and is a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) with over 17,000 students; PC proudly champions for social justice, equity, and access. The majority of our students are part-time, first-generation students seeking career technical education or university transfer.

Job Summary


Learning Commons check-in staff are the first point of contact for students seeking academic assistance at Phoenix College. This position assists the Check-In Desk Coordinator to create a welcoming learning environment; to ensure timely and equitable access to academic tutoring; and to make appropriate referrals to other services on campus. The check-in staff position is based on good customer service and treating each individual, who they encounter, with respect and kindness, so as to make their experience with tutoring at the Learning Commons a positive one.

Essential Functions:
50% - Checks students in and out for drop-in tutoring sessions; places students with proper tutor; maintains student usage data; monitors wait times; and uses
effective customer services skills to keep students and tutors informed.
40% - Welcomes students to tutoring and explains how to use our services; gets to know who our tutors are and what subject(s) the tutors are capable of tutoring;
knowledgeable about Learning Commons’ services and responds to inquiries generated virtually or by phone in a polite and professional manner; participates in
office functions as assigned.
10% - Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to maintain a courteous, friendly mannerism when working with students and staff virtually or on the phone; demonstrates patience and good customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated superior organizational skills; ability to perform multiple tasks while maintaining attention to details.
  • Ability to work with a diverse population.
  • Ability to keep a work schedule and present yourself in a professional manner.

Additional Requirements

  • Student must be attending Phoenix College during the current semester (enrolled in a minimum of 6 credits).
  • In order to qualify for a Federal Work-Study (FWS) job, a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) must be on file for the current award year and have eligible financial needs based on the college requirements. Please contact the Office of Financial Aid for more information prior to applying to a Federal Work-Study job.
  • FWS is a need-based, federally funded program.
  • FWS requires the completion of a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), and confirmation of federal work-study eligibility as determined by the financial aid office.
  • FWS does not directly pay for tuition, and funds are only available to eligible students attending a minimum of six (6) degree applicable hours in a federal student aid eligible program.
  • The FWS award amount is based on your FAFSA results and college funding availability, which will determine the number of hours available to work while supporting the students academic goals.
