What are the responsibilities and job description for the Aquatics Swim Lesson Deck Attendant position at Phillips Academy?
Position Summary
From July through the end of August 2026, the Deck Attendant, under the supervision of the Aquatics Director and swim lesson staff, supports the safe, organized, and efficient operation of the recreational swim lesson program. This role plays an important part in ensuring swimmers and families have a smooth experience from arrival through dismissal. The Deck Attendant helps maintain order on the pool deck, assists instructors as needed, and provides a welcoming presence for all participants. Training will be provided. This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefits eligible position with the exception of those benefits required by law.
Schedule
The Phillips Academy Aquatics Center features a 25-yard competition pool that serves as the home venue for Andover’s swimming, diving, and water polo programs. The pool can be configured with eight competition lanes or 13 practice lanes, providing flexibility for training, competition, instructional swim lessons, and recreational programming. It is also home to New England’s only full-sized high school water polo course.
This state-of-the-art facility includes adjustable starting blocks, two 1-meter diving boards with a dedicated diving area, an OMEGA Swiss Timing System for competitive events, and on-deck spectator seating for more than 300 guests. While the pool is utilized by Phillips Academy’s aquatics teams throughout the year, the Aquatics Center is expanding its offerings to include community recreation programs, diving instruction, lifeguard certification courses, competitive swim training, and swim lessons for participants of all ages and abilities. The facility is committed to providing high-quality aquatic opportunities for both the Academy and the greater community
Rate of pay will be based on experience and qualifications.

Schedule
- Weekday / evenings and weekend mornings based on swim lesson schedule
- Flexible hours depending on program needs
- Must be at least 16 years of age
- No prior aquatics experience required (training provided)
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to stay attentive, organized, and proactive in a fast-paced environment
- Comfortable working with children and families
- Dependable, punctual, and team-oriented
- Lifeguard Certification (Red Cross, YMCA, or equivalent)
- Experience in childcare or customer service
- Familiarity with swim lessons or aquatics programs
- Supervise swimmers on the pool deck before, during, and after swim lessons
- Assist instructors with organizing class groups and managing swimmer transitions between lessons
- Help ensure swimmers are lined up, ready, and assigned to the correct lesson area
- Greet families and guide them to the correct lesson locations, locker rooms, or viewing areas
- Provide clear directions and support to ensure a smooth and on-time check-in process
- Monitor pool deck activity to help maintain safety and enforce facility rules
- Assist with basic setup and breakdown of lesson equipment (kickboards, toys, lane lines, etc.)
- Support lesson flow by communicating with instructors, swimmers, and families as needed
- Maintain a professional, friendly, and helpful presence for all participants
- Report any safety concerns, incidents, or issues immediately to aquatics director
- Help maintain cleanliness and organization of the pool deck area
