What are the responsibilities and job description for the Aquatics Swim Coach - Temporary Summer Position position at Phillips Academy?
Under the supervision of the Aquatics Director, the Aquatics Swim Coach, from July through the end of August 2026, is responsible for coaching non-team related competitive swim practices for individuals. This position will provide high-quality, personalized coaching across all levels of ability. This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefits eligible position with the exception of those benefits required by law.
SCHEDULE:
- Primarily weeknights and Saturday afternoons with potential of some weekend early morning practices
MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- Competitive swimming and / or coaching experience
- Lifeguard Certification
PREFERRED:
- CPR / AED and First Aid Certification (or willingness to obtain)
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide high-quality, consistent coaching across all levels of ability
- Evaluate swimmers’ abilities and tailor programs to improve technique, speed, and endurance
- Teach and refine all competitive strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly)
- Develop, write, and implement structured swim workouts for each practice
- Monitor performance and adjust workouts based on progress
- Build positive relationships with swimmers through active listening and engagement
- Support athletes in achieving their individual goals
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: N/A
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Ability to stand, walk, and remain in the pool for extended periods
- Ability to lift or assist participants when needed
- Exposure to pool chemicals and varying temperatures
The Phillips Academy Aquatics Center features a 25-yard competition pool that serves as the home venue for Andover’s swimming, diving, and water polo programs. The pool can be configured with eight competition lanes or 13 practice lanes, providing flexibility for training, competition, instructional swim lessons, and recreational programming. It is also home to New England’s only full-sized high school water polo course.
This state-of-the-art facility includes adjustable starting blocks, two 1-meter diving boards with a dedicated diving area, an OMEGA Swiss Timing System for competitive events, and on-deck spectator seating for more than 300 guests. While the pool is utilized by Phillips Academy’s aquatics teams throughout the year, the Aquatics Center is expanding its offerings to include community recreation programs, diving instruction, lifeguard certification courses, competitive swim training, and swim lessons for participants of all ages and abilities.
