The Safety Specialist is responsible for leading the site's health, safety and environmental efforts. This is a full-time, exempt position that reports directly to the Plant Manager and Director of EHS.

The Safety Specialist is responsible for leading the site's health, safety and environmental efforts. This is a full-time, exempt position that reports directly to the Plant Manager and Director of EHS.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Work Safely and effectively independently or as part of a team
- Help to develop and maintain a "Safety as a Value" culture
- Investigate accident, near miss and property damage incidents
- Act as liaison between the company and regulatory agencies
- Coordinate the maintenance and implementation of the EHS program, compliance plans and initiatives
- Maintain site compliance with all safety and health regulations issued by federal, state and local agencies and corporate policies
- Keep abreast of any safety and environmental law or regulatory changes that impact the organization
- Conduct safety and health training courses including site specific hazard, new miner, experienced miner, annual refresher and new task Training.
- Ensure that departmental and company goals and objectives are achieved by participating in short and long-range planning activities
- Daily monitoring of safety practices for compliance
- Conduct and analyze work-place safety observations
- Conduct root cause analysis investigations
- Develop, distribute, communicate and track safety talks/meetings
- Participate in risk assessments
- Assist with contractor safety oversight
- Attend contractor safety meetings as needed and provide safety leadership
- Conduct routine audits
- Tabulate safety statistics and generate safety reports
- Participate in regulatory safety inspections
- Record keeping and documentation
- Assist with drug and alcohol testing program
- Participate in on-call schedule as needed
- Other duties as assigned
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- High School Diploma or equivalent required
- Degree in Occupational Health & Safety preferred
- Three years' of safety experience at an MSHA Regulated site preferred
- Experience training/teaching employees in the field and in the classroom
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Ability to interpret MSHA and OSHA standards and implement regulatory requirements
- Working knowledge of 30 CFR Part 46, 47, 50, 56, 57 and 62
- Knowledge of industrial hygiene
- Strong organizational skills
- Interpersonal skills to work successfully within a team-based environment
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Strong computer skills
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORKING CONDITIONS
- All duties require outside assignments and require periods of work in all weather conditions-heat, cold, wet or dry, and dusty
- Ability to climb stairs, climb ladders, reach, stoop, squat, tolerate prolonged standing/walking, balance, bend, twist, crawl, kneel, push and pull objects
- Ability to tolerate working outdoors in all environmental temperatures and weather
- May be necessary to drive a company vehicle
