Job Description: Shipping Operator

Location: Houston, TX


Position Summary:

The Shipping Operator will manage and support the daily operation of all Spot & Time Charter vessels. This will include but not limited to the analysis and execution of charter parties, approval of stow plans, coordinating cargo quantities with trading teams, issuance of voyage orders providing specific instructions applicable to the voyage, managing vessel performance at sea and in port, as well as the loading/discharging of intended cargoes, appointment of port agents, towage services, and fulfilling any bunker requirements on Time Chartered tonnage.


Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Manage a fleet of Spot and Time Charter Vessels safely and in compliance with company policies and international regulations
  • Track and monitor all spot and TC vessels upon departure from load port to ensure that the vessel’s position, speed, ETA, and cargo requirements are in compliance with the commercial terms.
  • Coordinate loading and discharge port operations including but not limited to requesting the necessary stowage plan, load and discharge sequence options to ship-owners, providing necessary load and discharge instructions to owners, production of letter of indemnity (LOI), arrangement of agents and payment of port costs, monitoring the load and discharge port operations in order to ensure that no cargo is left onboard, and process freight/port costs/deviation payments in accordance with Charter Party terms.
  • Liaise with the Vetting Dept. in assessing the vessel performance of our fleet as per the charter party terms and conditions and offer recommendations for the future utilization of the already charter vessels.
  • Monitor vessel performance at sea including bunker consumption and ROB, speed, and cargo tank preparation in compliance with port and/or customer requirements
  • Generate reports related to voyage analysis, tracking vessel volumes, data to support cost savings and P&L.
  • Interface between internal stakeholders to develop vessel schedules, optimization, and utilization

  • Co-ordinate Bunkering requirements for TC Vessels.
  • Assist Commercial/Chartering/Trading Team in Vessel/STS Clearances as needed.


Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Maritime/Marine Transportation, Shipping or relevant focus or equivalent professional certification
  • Minimum of 5-10 years’ experience with Tanker Operations either with ship owner or trading/oil major. Experience handling other Vessel types is a plus.
  • Commercial approach to the business with team mindset to achieve common goals.
  • Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, multi-cultural environment.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment with minimal supervision
  • Ability to make risk-based and well-reasoned decisions with uncertain information and in the face of material financial risk and operational stress.
  • Seagoing Experience working on Crude Oil/Product/Chemical/LPG Tankers preferable
