What are the responsibilities and job description for the Manager, Pricing Strategy & Analytics position at Petrocard?
Position Summary
The Manager, Pricing Strategy & Analytics owns the full pricing function for our commercial business — from daily execution to long-term strategy. In the near term, this person will be hands-on: setting and updating commercial, delivered, and retail prices daily, managing approval workflows, and ensuring pricing accuracy across all customer-facing outputs. At the same time, they bring strategic thinking and analytical rigor to the role — building scalable frameworks, designing efficient processes, and positioning the function for growth. As the organization scales, this manager will be well-positioned to scale the function appropriately. The ideal candidate is energized by both the discipline of daily market pricing and the challenge of building something better.
Key Responsibilities
Daily Pricing Execution
- Set and update commercial, delivered, and retail fuel prices on a daily basis, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and alignment with current market conditions and margin targets.
- Monitor relevant cost indexes, rack prices, and market indicators throughout the day; make responsive pricing adjustments as conditions warrant.
- Manage the workflow and approval for pricing changes — define approval thresholds, route exceptions appropriately, and maintain a clear audit trail.
- Design and document pricing workflows to ensure consistency, reduce errors, and support future delegation to analytical staff as the team grows.
- Serve as the final check on price accuracy before quotes and invoices are issued to commercial, delivered, and retail customers.
Pricing Strategy & Decision-Making
- Develop and lead enterprise pricing strategy, integrating market intelligence, cost economics, and competitive dynamics to drive profitability and growth.
- Translate macro market trends (index movements, supply/demand shifts, regulatory changes) into timely and well-reasoned pricing actions.
- Design pricing frameworks for diverse customer segments, contract structures, and business lines; ensure consistency and integrity across all pricing outputs.
- Own margin performance monitoring — proactively identify risks and opportunities and recommend corrective actions.
- Lead bid and contract pricing support, collaborating with Sales to build competitive price structures while protecting margin targets.
Data Analysis & Modeling
- Build and maintain financial models to evaluate pricing effectiveness, forecast revenue and margin outcomes, and perform scenario analysis.
- Leverage analytical tools (SQL, Python, R, Power BI, or equivalent) to interrogate large datasets, identify pricing patterns, and surface actionable insights.
- Develop and automate pricing dashboards and reporting infrastructure to enable real-time visibility into margins, market conditions, and pricing performance.
- Identify emerging analytics needs within the pricing function and drive automation and process improvements to increase speed and accuracy.
- Perform variance analysis to understand drivers of margin performance and communicate findings clearly to leadership.
Cross-Functional Leadership & Communication
- Serve as the internal subject matter expert on pricing; advise sales, operations, and executive leadership on pricing strategy and market conditions.
- Communicate pricing decisions, market intelligence, and performance insights to diverse stakeholders with clarity and confidence.
- Partner with Supply, Dispatch, Accounting, and Sales teams to ensure pricing inputs and outputs are accurate, timely, and operationally executable.
- Promote pricing and economics literacy across the organization through documentation, training, and ongoing stakeholder engagement.
Systems & Process Ownership
- Serve as the primary owner and subject matter expert for pricing systems and platforms; manage configurations, improvements, and issue resolution.
- Ensure compliance with customer contracts, supplier agreements, and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Continuously evaluate and improve pricing processes to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and responsiveness to market conditions.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Finance, Mathematics, Business, or a related quantitative field.
- 5 years of experience in pricing, financial analysis, supply economics, or a related analytical role.
- Demonstrated ability to build and interpret financial models, perform variance analysis, and translate data into business recommendations.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables, financial modeling, and complex formulas.
- Hands-on experience with at least one analytical platform: SQL, Python, R, or equivalent.
- Experience with business intelligence tools (Power BI, Tableau, or similar) for dashboard development and reporting.
- Exceptional analytical thinking and problem-solving skills; comfort operating in data-rich, fast-moving environments.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex analysis clearly to non-technical audiences.
- Proven cross-functional collaboration skills and the ability to build credibility across all levels of an organization.
Preferred
- Experience in fuel, commodities, logistics, or a similarly index-driven industry.
- Familiarity with ERP or pricing management systems (e.g., Axxis, Sage, or similar).
- Experience managing or mentoring analytical staff.
- Knowledge of carbon policy, fuel tax structures, or regulatory frameworks impacting pricing decisions.
What We’re Looking For
The ideal candidate thrives at the intersection of execution and strategy. They bring the discipline and market instincts needed to make accurate pricing decisions daily, and the analytical mindset to continuously improve how that work gets done. They are comfortable being the sole owner of the pricing function today while thinking ahead to how they would scale, document, and eventually delegate it. Someone who views process design as a competitive advantage — not just a task — will excel in this role.
