PetFix Northeast Ohio is a non-profit clinic that performs high quality, affordable spay/neuter surgeries. Our goal is to prevent pet homelessness by making spay/neuter accessible to everyone. Since beginning operations in 2006, PetFix has performed more than 140,000 surgeries.
Job Summary
The Veterinary Assistant is responsible for providing support to the Veterinarian and Veterinary Technicians with pre, peri, and post-operative care of patients, as well as maintaining the order and cleanliness of the clinic.
Summary of Essential Responsibilities and Job Tasks
Assist Veterinarian by recording an animal’s health information on the patient’s chart during the physical examination.
Prepping animals for surgery while monitoring vitals, ensuring sterility and safety of patients by following standard protocols
Assisting with movement of patients, monitoring of recovering animals and general flow during surgery.
Ability to respond appropriately in an emergency and take direction for veterinarian and veterinary technician.
Have a general understanding monitoring anesthesia and notifying others of any abnormalities
Assist with patient intake and discharge in a friendly professional manner
Must be able to communicate basic veterinary concepts to owners (e.g. health findings, vaccines schedules, post-operative medications) and relay information given by a veterinarian.
Ability to learn characteristics, animal body language and safe handling techniques of both dogs and cats (e.g. Aggressive vs Fearful behaviors)
Use proper restraint of animals for physical exam and sedation
Help to ensure our clinic is as fear free as possible for our patients
Ability to identify personal limitations and ask for help when needed.
Assist in properly unloading and loading patients in the transport van in a manner consistent with PetFix protocol to prevent injury.
Clean surgical instruments and assemble and sterilize surgery packs throughout the day.
Keep other surgical equipment cleaned throughout the day (e.g. anesthesia masks, ET tubes)
Maintain a clean working area throughout the day and thoroughly clean the prep room and surgery room at the end of the day.
Washing and folding laundry.
Physical and Emotional/Mental Requirements:
Must be able to work standing or sitting for 8 hours or more
Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. on a regular basis
Must be able to bend and kneel repeatedly throughout the day
Must be able to work under fast-paced and sometimes stressful conditions and work efficiently and effectively under those conditions.
Must be able to respond quickly to a variety of medical situations (with training)
Must be able to cope with death due to surgical complication or euthanasia
Ability to process information rapidly and accurately
Ability to recognize a need for assistance and ask for help
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Ability to make decisions
Ability to cope with frustrating situation and remain calm
