Wet Utility Lead Pipelayer

Position Overview

Experienced, safety-first Wet Utility Lead Pipelayer needed to lead pipe crews on municipal heavy civil and underground utility projects across Maryland, D.C., Northern Virginia, and Delaware. Capable of leading other pipelayers and helpers, directing daily installation sequence, and ensuring high-quality production of water, sewer, and storm systems.

Key Responsibilities

•       Lead the pipe crew in accurate installation; direct sequencing, grade control, and fitting installation.

•       Lay and join all common wet utility materials to plan grade and alignment with minimal supervision.

•       Verify drawings, profiles, and take-offs; stage and pre-assemble fittings as practical.

•       Set and maintain precise grade/alignment; coach others on grade methods.

•       Install complex fittings, valve assemblies, hydrants, manholes, and appurtenances; troubleshoot issues.

•       Coordinate with excavator operator, helpers, and Foreman to maximize production while protecting quality and safety.

•       Train and mentor Pipelayers and Helpers on techniques, safety, and material handling.

•       Support trench safety, shoring, and testing; escalate schedule or quality issues.

•       Maintain high workmanship standards and leave work area organized.

Requirements

•       4 years wet utility pipe experience with demonstrated ability to lead a small crew or complex runs.

•       Strong plan-reading and grade control skills; proven skill with multiple materials and fittings.

•       Physical ability for trench work and heavy lifting; all-weather outdoor work.

•       Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.

•       OSHA 10 required; confined-space and additional safety certifications preferred.

•       Pass pre-employment drug screen and background check.

Physical & Work Environment

Full-time field leadership role. Outdoor work in all weather, trenches, and active sites across the region. Overtime and early starts common.
