What are the responsibilities and job description for the Estimator position at Personna Employment Solutions?
We are seeking an experienced Estimator to support structural steel, miscellaneous metals, commercial fencing, automated gates and entry systems, and specialty construction projects.
This is not a general construction estimating role. The ideal candidate understands how steel and specialty-metal scopes are actually built and can translate drawings, specifications, bid documents, and site conditions into accurate quantities, labor assumptions, material requirements, equipment needs, subcontractor scopes, and competitive pricing.
Projects may include structural steel erection, metal decking, miscellaneous metals, commercial and high-security fencing, swing and cantilever gates, automated gate operators, access-control systems, anti-vehicle applications, PEMBs, and federal, industrial, infrastructure, and commercial work.
Key Responsibilities
- Review drawings, specifications, addenda, and bid documents to determine complete project scope.
- Perform detailed quantity takeoffs for structural steel, decking, miscellaneous metals, fencing, gates, operators, access-control systems, foundations, hardware, and related components.
- Develop labor, material, equipment, freight, mobilization, travel, subcontractor, and indirect cost estimates.
- Interpret structural, architectural, civil, site, electrical, and specialty drawings.
- Solicit and evaluate pricing from steel suppliers, fabricators, fencing suppliers, equipment vendors, subcontractors, and manufacturers.
- Identify scope gaps, constructability concerns, schedule conflicts, site-access issues, and other project risks.
- Participate in go/no-go decisions and evaluate project fit, profitability, manpower requirements, and risk versus reward.
- Develop RFIs, exclusions, assumptions, alternates, and value-engineering opportunities.
- Prepare competitive proposals and detailed cost breakdowns for management review.
- Support project buyout and turnover to project management and field operations following award.
- Maintain historical pricing, production rates, vendor information, and project-cost data to improve future estimating accuracy.
Preferred Background
- 3 years of estimating, preconstruction, project management, detailing, fabrication, or related construction experience preferred.
- Experience with structural steel, steel erection, metal fabrication, miscellaneous metals, fencing, automated gates, access control, or specialty construction strongly preferred.
- Strong ability to read construction drawings, specifications, details, and bid documents.
- Experience performing detailed material and labor takeoffs.
- Understanding of steel erection, welding, bolting, rigging, equipment, crew productivity, and field installation.
- Familiarity with fencing systems, gate operators, access controls, foundations, and associated hardware is highly valuable.
- Experience evaluating supplier, fabricator, subcontractor, and vendor quotations.
- Strong understanding of labor, materials, equipment, mobilization, overhead, margin, and project risk.
- Experience with commercial, industrial, infrastructure, public works, or federal construction is a plus.
Technology
Experience with Bluebeam Revu and Microsoft Excel is highly desirable. Experience with Procore, Tekla, AutoCAD, SDS/2, PlanSwift, On-Screen Takeoff, or similar estimating, detailing, or construction-management platforms is also valuable.
