The starting salary will be determined with consideration given to both the candidate's educational background and relevant work experience.
Must possess a valid driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record per County policy.
This is a non-exempt position working 37.5 hours weekly/1950 hours annually.

- Performs and promotes outreach within the community including public speaking events, local rescues and professional businesses to increase support for Shelter Programs.
- Maintains a successful Rescue Transfer Program by continued contact with approved rescue groups, actively recruiting new rescue groups, and coordinating placement and transfer of eligible animals into approved rescue groups utilizing phone, email, and social media. Coordinates successful transport and transfer of animal(s) to rescue groups.
- Develops, implements and maintains a Foster Program, including both short and long term foster program plans, goals and objectives. Determines eligibility of individual animals and foster participants, recruitment of foster participants, and managing necessary supplies and media for a successful Foster Program.
- Works directly with other shelter staff to determine appropriate rehabilitation, placement, paths or maintenance for animals eligible for rescue or foster. Performs appropriate health and behavioral assessments on individual animals and administers treatments as directed by shelter Veterinarians.
- Recruits, trains, supervises rescue groups and foster participants for respective programs. Develops training materials and related materials for respective programs.
- Develops, documents, implements and updates program policies and procedures. Compiles data, prepares reports and works with Shelter Manager to perform needs assessments and discuss progress. Evaluates programs routinely to determine program needs and growth or improvement opportunities.
- Serves as the primary contact for the Rescue Transfer and Foster Programs. Responds to inquiries via email, mail, phone and in person regarding respective programs in a timely and professional manner.
- Maintains social media calendars and website pages with up to date and relevant information on programs and events.
- Accurately maintains all required records in the shelter’s database in a timely manner.
- Provides humane treatment of all animals at all times.
- Maintaining cleanliness of shelter. This includes, but is not limited to laundry, dusting and sweeping/mopping, removing soil and waste from kennels, cleaning and disinfecting kennels and common areas of shelter according to shelter procedures and mandatory state regulations.
- Provides training and general care for animals in the shelter, including but not limited to feeding, exercise, training/behavioral modification, and assist Shelter Manager with assessments and medical care.
- Promotes and participates in all adoptions and offsite events.
- Promotes and plans yearly summer camp.
- Performs related work as required.
- Preferred Associates Degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Marketing, Animal Science or other related field with 2 years related experience and or combination of education and experience.
- An acceptable general background investigation to include a local and state criminal history, sex offender registry check and valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
- Certification as a Certified Rabies Vaccinator in the state of North Carolina within an established time frame.
- Certification as Certified Euthanasia Technician in the state of North Carolina within an established time frame. Performing humane euthanasia of an animal(s) may be required.
- Must complete FEMA IS100, IS200, IS700 and IS800 courses
- Vaccination for Rabies may be required.
- In the event of an emergency, as determined by the County Manager or Emergency Services Director, participation in preparedness and response operations should be expected. Employee may be required to participate in exercises and regular preparedness training and may be required to fill a temporary assignment in a role different than hired position, work before, during or after an emergency which may include a change in normal or extended work hours or location.
