The Van Upfit Mechanic and Supervisor will be responsible for the day to day supervisory oversight to a team of upfit technicians while stepping in with hands-on mechanical assistance when needed. This is a blended role of skilled mechanical work with team leadership, ensuring that all vehicle builds are completed safely, on time, and to the highest quality standards.

Requirements

- Install commercial van upfits (shelving, racks, wiring, lighting, flooring, towing) per client spec, ensuring compliance with DOT and safety standards.
- Perform fleet vehicle maintenance and repairs (oil, brakes, tires, fluids, suspension).
- Diagnose mechanical/electrical faults using diagnostic tools and inspection.
- Conduct quality control on completed vehicles.
- Maintain a clean, organized, OSHA-compliant work area and enforce safety protocols.
- Schedule and manage daily/weekly work for mechanics and upfit technicians, balancing workload and deadlines.
- Assign tasks, monitor progress, and provide hands-on guidance and support.
- Conduct meetings and performance reviews; foster development and accountability.
- Identify training needs and coordinate opportunities.
- Serve as the primary escalation point for technical issues, customer concerns, and shop conflicts.
- Collaborate with management on staffing, workflow, and procurement.
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years of hands-on automotive maintenance and repair experience, preferably including commercial vehicles or fleet work.
- Technical Skills: Demonstrated proficiency in vehicle upfitting, electrical systems, and general mechanical repair.
- Leadership: Proven ability to lead, schedule, and direct a team in a shop or field environment.
- Diagnostic Tools: Proficient in the use of OBD-II scanners, multimeters, and other automotive diagnostic equipment.
- License: Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record; ability to operate all vehicle types serviced.
Preferred Qualifications
- ASE Certification (one or more areas) strongly preferred.
- Experience with commercial van upfitting brands such as Adrian Steel, Masterack, or Ranger Design.
- Prior supervisory or lead technician experience in an automotive or fleet environment.
- Knowledge of DOT compliance and vehicle upfit safety standards.
- Experience with fleet management software or work order tracking systems.
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification is a plus.
