Job Description:
Perform and provide general instruction and oversight (to graduate and medical students, resident physicians or other learners) in the laboratory or operating room environment.
Technical skills to include, but not limited to, venipuncture, proper handling of small animals, submission of biological samples, sterile techniques and surgical preparation.
Perform preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative monitoring on patients during in vivo and ex vivo physiologic experimentation. Round postoperatively during recovery phases of survival procedures and routinely monitor subjects pre- and postoperatively as needed. Routine care includes preparation of animals for surgery, ensuring adherence to varying diets or environmental controls, allocating to specific dietary regimens and monitoring food intake/body weight.
Attend and participate in laboratory/surgical sciences lab meetings to discuss patient updates, protocol changes, and other research/clinical plans.
Participate in and instruct set up and clean up for different procedures in the small animal operating facilities. Prepare for sterile surgical procedures and understand preparation of surgical suite and instruments for successful survival surgery.
Perform and instruct common tasks within the metabolic surgery laboratory and small animal operating facility; including, but not limited to, proper rough clip and prep as well as, final sterile scrub for surgical procedures. Set up, operate, maintain specialized equipment (surgical microscopes, non-invasive monitoring equipment), management of sterile fields, checking proper sterile indicators present, and circulation duties in a sterile procedure, as well as assist with and/or complete surgical procedures under supervision/guidance (e.g. catheterization, suturing, wound care, catheter/feeding tube line maintenance).
Perform and instruct sedation protocols, administration, as well as monitoring of sedated and/or anesthetized patients and recovery. Be involved and instruct protocol selection, calculations/verify sedation and analgesia for patients, proper logging, acquiring, and administration of sedation for patients. Monitor patients under sedation and prepare for reversal or intervention if complications occur. Monitor surgical patients post-operatively. Knowledge of possible complications and how to monitor for them.
Perform and teach proper would care and monitoring. Maintain surgical/research inventory/supplies.
Other duties as assigned.
