Cafeteria Assistant

Job Description

Position Summary:

Assistance with the operation of our lunch cafeteria on campus at our school in Bristol, PA that typically serves 300 people a day. This position is full-time with hours varying between 30 and 40 per week. The schedule includes day-time hours Monday thru Friday, and evening hours on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday. This individual will work with 1 other assistant under the guidance and supervision of the Cafeteria Manager. Although the manager is the chef, this position assists with food preparation, handling the cash register, short-order cooking, and cleaning. The individual must provide a safe, secure and clean environment for students and staff, and must be flexible and able to blend in with the needs of other departments.

• Accountable (through use and supervision) of register, and the safe handling of cash.
• Assure execution of the cafeteria’s short order system. The assistant is given a role for the process and must execute that role to their best ability.
• Assist with opening and closing of cafeteria, when needed.
• Will help unpack and load new deliveries into the storage area of the kitchen. The manager may ask you to assist with “checking” each item in after delivery, to make sure everything is received.
• Responsible for the organization and proper storage of food/inventory.
• Assist with the cafeteria’s cleaning efforts: including mopping, wiping daily and efficiently washing dishes so that meal times aren’t interrupted.
• Assist with the cleaning/maintenance of the kitchen’s equipment and appliances.
• Under instruction from manager, ensure that Health Board-approved safety policies/procedures are being used throughout the day and reminding the other assistant to do the same.
• Help with preparation, packaging, and delivery of Daycare meals for the children in our Pennco Tech Day Care.
• Must have ability to work in a fast environment. The students of our school have a designated meal time, so the lunch period is in one large “wave”.

Position Requirements:

• One (1) year of experience working in a restaurant or cafeteria atmosphere and/or retail establishment.
• Superior communication skills, both written and oral.
• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Ability to work at least 3 hours (per night) on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings.
• Ability to handle multiple tasks.
• Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds, stand for long periods of time, and withstand heat.
• Effective problem resolution skills.
• Ability to operate traditional, stand-alone cash register proficiently and count/handle money quickly and in an organized fashion.

Reports to: Cafeteria Manager

Interacts daily with department heads, instructors, and staff.
