The Pathology Lab Assistant is the clinical and clerical assistant to the Histology and Flow Cytometry Teams. The Pathology Laboratory Assistant provides vital support to the technical team by preparing materials, handling specimens, and operating laboratory equipment throughout the histology workflow. This role ensures accurate, timely processing that contributes to high-quality patient diagnostic results. S/he is responsible for all specimen handling, accessioning and body fluid preparation. S/he is primarily responsible for preparation of pap smears, FNA's, and surgical specimens for analysis by the Pathologist. Performs specimen accessioning, distribution, staining, cover slipping and repair of histology slides, maintains slide files and records. Responsible for data entry of patient information, transcription and distribution of Pathology reports, and general operation of the AP computer system. The incumbent is responsible for all aspects of customer service and communication, involving answering telephones, sending letters, follow-up inquiries, and assisting other physicians and their office staff as appropriate.
Qualifications:
Education: High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) equivalent.
Licensure/Certifications: NA
Experience: Requires clinical and practical pathology experience including assisting in receipt and processing surgical specimens as typically acquired in a similar environment.
Previous experience as a Laboratory Assistant in a Pathology setting sufficient to demonstrate competency in a highly technical environment required.
Experience in an acute care setting is preferred.
Previous specimen processing experience preferred.
Skills and Knowledge:
Knowledge of PowerPath, CoPath or other Anatomical Pathology software systems
Must demonstrate flexibility and ability to change tasks rapidly and frequently.
Working knowledge of basic pathology terminology required.
Must be willing to work with hazardous chemicals, including formalin, alcohol and xylene.

Pay: $32.00 - $42.00 per hour
