About the Role:

The Orthopaedic Assistant plays a vital role in supporting orthopaedic surgeons and healthcare teams by providing comprehensive patient care and administrative assistance within orthopaedic clinics or hospitals. This position focuses on facilitating smooth clinical operations, including preparing patients for examinations, assisting with diagnostic procedures, and managing medical equipment. The Orthopaedic Assistant ensures accurate documentation and communication between patients and medical staff, contributing to effective treatment planning and follow-up care. By maintaining a compassionate and professional demeanor, the assistant helps improve patient experience and outcomes throughout their orthopaedic treatment journey. Ultimately, this role is essential in enhancing the efficiency and quality of orthopaedic services delivered to patients across diverse healthcare settings.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; completion of a formal orthopaedic assistant training program or relevant medical assistant certification preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of human anatomy, particularly musculoskeletal system, and medical terminology.
  • Experience with electronic health record (EHR) systems and standard office software.
  • Strong communication skills to interact effectively with patients and healthcare professionals.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and work under supervision in a clinical environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certification as an Orthopaedic Assistant (COA) or equivalent credential.
  • Previous experience working in an orthopaedic or surgical clinical setting.
  • Familiarity with radiographic imaging procedures and assisting with casting or splinting.
  • CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Additional training in patient education or rehabilitation support.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare patients for orthopaedic examinations and procedures by explaining processes and ensuring comfort.
  • Assist orthopaedic surgeons and medical staff during clinical assessments and minor procedures.
  • Manage and maintain orthopaedic instruments, equipment, and supplies to ensure readiness and safety.
  • Document patient histories, treatment plans, and progress notes accurately in electronic health records.
  • Coordinate patient scheduling, follow-up appointments, and communication to support continuity of care.
  • Educate patients on post-treatment care, rehabilitation exercises, and use of orthopaedic devices as directed.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including physical therapists, radiologists, and administrative staff.
  • Ensure compliance with healthcare regulations, infection control protocols, and patient confidentiality standards.

The Orthopaedic Assistant utilizes strong interpersonal skills daily to communicate clearly and empathetically with patients, ensuring they understand procedures and care instructions. Attention to detail is critical when documenting patient information and managing medical records to maintain accuracy and compliance with healthcare standards.
