Job Title: Seasonal Wildlife Rescue Technician (6 months)Division: Animal Rescue & ControlReports to: Director, Animal Rescue & Control FLSA Status: Non-Exempt/Non-Union/Full-TimeSalary: $22.66/hour Summary: Facilitate and respond to reports of wild animals (songbirds, seabirds, waterfowl, raptors, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians) in distress , in a wide variety of situations, using safe animal handling and transport techniques, safe driving practices, while providing good customer service, along with the ability to communicate in both written and verbal forms.Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following, other duties may be assigned.Provide humane care for all animals, wild and domestic, both in the field and in the Society's care.Responds to reports of sick, injured, deceased, or abandoned wildlife in a PHS/SPCA vehicle using safe driving practices.Operate a two-way radio and other communication technology in a concise and professional manner.Rescue and/or relocate wild animals in distress in a safe and humane manner, often using specialized equipment. May be called upon to assist Animal Control Officers or may call Animal Control Officers to assist on technical or complex rescues or for transporting wild animals that have been impounded.Maintain the PHS/SPCA vehicle in a clean and orderly manner, stocked with the necessary equipment. Maintain vehicle and equipment in good working order and report damage to vehicle or equipment.Assist in the euthanasia of wild animals as necessary.Maintain daily work records on appropriate forms.Answer questions and advise the public regarding wild animal issues, quarantines, and other animal laws and related issues.Assist other departments as assigned.May be required to locate, quarantine, and observe animals for symptoms of rabies, and prepare and generate animal bite reports as necessary.Responsible for properly assessing each wild animal situation they respond to and handle everything from small songbirds to larger mammals and raptors in the proper manner, whether it involves education, rescue, or transport, or any combination of those or other skills. Perform other duties as assigned to ensure a positive public image, enhance the operation of the organization and improve the quality of life for all animals.Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Must possess the ability to manage the emotional aspect of end-of-life services and humane euthanasia, and support staff in high-emotion circumstances. Must also have a flexible schedule and available to work weekends and holidays, as needed. Upon hire, must pass a background check. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of local wildlife including their natural environment and behaviors throughout the year, including ability to correctly identify a wide variety of wild animals, including birds, mammals, reptiles, and others, to ensure proper and safe handling. Able to effectively work in a fast paced and high-pressured environment and remain calm under stressful circumstances. Must be able to multitask efficiently. Able to work well in a team environment and have a professional demeanor.Education and/or Experience: High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Some college with a background in biology or a related animal science is desirable. Language Skills: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to members of the public, volunteers, and other employees of the organization. Good verbal and written communication skills.Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. Computer Skills: Knowledge of Chameleon database software or become proficient within one (1) month from hire date. Basic knowledge, or become proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and computer keyboarding skills, and data entry. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Valid California Driver’s License with a clean driving record to be insured with PHS/SPCA insurance.Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to zoonotic disease, exposure to aggressive/feral domestic and wild animals and toxic or caustic chemicals, possible hostile public, operation of vehicle under all types of weather/road conditions. Must be available to work irregular hours, shifts, weekends, and holidays. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
