Job Title: Seasonal Summer Camp Counselor (30 hrs/week)

Division: Community Engagement

Reports To: Lead Educator

FLSA Status: Part-time, Non-Exempt, Non-Union

Salary: $22.66/hour

 

 

Summary: To provide assistance and supervision to campers aged 8-13 years old during summer Animal Camps at PHS/SPCA. To assist in the implementation of camp programs in a safe manner while fostering compassion toward all animals.


  • Assist with and lead Animal Camp activities, games, presentations, and workshops.


  • Assist with the preparation for Animal Camp including sorting and organizing camp supplies and materials, printing and preparing camp binders, and other tasks as assigned.


  • Assist with designing, implementing, and evaluating camp activities.


  • Assist with supervising campers and maintaining a safe and healthy camp environment at all times.


  • Demonstrate appropriate animal interactions and handling of various animal species. Assist students in touching and holding animals in a safe and secure manner.


  • Demonstrate excellent customer service skills when interacting with campers and parents/guardians.


  • Always treat animals and people with respect to promote and enhance a humane, compassionate and caring attitude toward animals and others at all times.


  • Perform other special projects or duties as assigned.

  • Familiarity of animals and animal welfare issues outside of ownership preferred. Affection for animals, concern for their welfare and willingness to handle and interact with various species of animals required.


  • Ability to multitask while maintaining attention to detail. Ability to demonstrate problem solving skills, flexibility, and creativity while supervising and participating in camp programs.


  • Personable, approachable and has a positive attitude in the shelter environment and while interacting with campers and parents/guardians.


  • Comfort speaking in front of a youth audience and leading lessons about animal-related topics.


  • Upon hire, must pass a background check.


  • Must be able to work8:30am-3:00pm, Monday – Friday June 15th-July 3rd AND July 20th-August 7th

 

Other Requirements:  

Education/Experience:

Experience working with or supervising children preferred. Knowledge of animal care and welfare issues desired. Experience working with children ages 8-13 years old preferred.


Language Skills: 

Strong communication and interpersonal skills required. Ability to effectively present information to groups of children. Ability to multitask, manage and lead campers while maintaining safety. Sensitivity to the needs of diverse audiences.


Computer Skills:

Working knowledge of Word, and Excel, computer keyboarding skills, and familiarity with conducting internet searches.

 

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Certification in Pediatric First Aid & CPR desired. 

 

 

Physical Demands:

While performing this job, employee will regularly be required to use hands and arms to reach, grasp and hold animals, supplies and other tools; to talk and speak clearly and loudly to groups, to hear questions and other noises. This position requires a great deal of standing, walking, sitting, kneeling, general mobility, lifting (25 lbs), carrying, pushing and regular climbing of stairs.

 

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to loud noises, odors, and outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Allergic conditions, which could be aggravated when handling or working with animals may be a disqualification. While working with animals there is a small risk of exposure to parasites and infectious diseases. This position has designated start times due to time-sensitive duties, opening the shelter, offering services, etc.
