POSITION PURPOSE |
Provides instruction and guidance at the high school level within the Public Safety career sectors of law enforcement, firefighting, emergency medical technician, and emergency management. Facilitates student success in academic and interpersonal skills through academic courses of study and implementation of state and district approved curriculum, documenting teaching and student progress/activities/outcomes; addressing specific needs of students; providing a safe and optimal learning environment; and providing feedback to students, parents and administration regarding student progress, expectations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS |

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES |
· Knowledge of public safety areas including law enforcement, firefighter, emergency medical technician or emergency management. · Knowledge of Common Core and NC Essential Standards. · Knowledge of General Statute 115C of the NC State Law concerning Public Education. · Ability to manage time, meet deadlines, prioritize projects, plan starting and ending deadlines, and successfully bring closure to projects. · Strong interpersonal and communication skills. · Ability and desire to seek and pass on knowledge to others in an educational/learning environment. · Proficiency in common desktop applications (web browsing, word processing, image editing etc.) required. · Ability to work effectively with administrators, colleagues, central office and school based staff, students, parents and the community. · Ability to work confidentially and with discretion.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE |
T&I Licensure Area 74099 Public Safety Examples of Related Degrees • Fire Science, Law Enforcement, EMS Management, any medical related degree such as Nursing, EMT, paramedic, Environmental Management, Critical Incident Mgt., Public Safety Administration, Homeland Security, Paralegal, Criminal Psychology, Law and Justice, etc. Examples of Industry-Related Work Experience • Introduction to Public Safety, any area of public safety is acceptable (fire, volunteer fire, law, medical, emergency management). Required Industry Credential (Before teaching unless noted).
To teach Public Safety, no specific certification is required; only relevant work experience.

CERTIFICATION AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS |
Residency License(s) Required Degree Level: Bachelor's Degree
AND
24 credit hours in the Content area
OR Passing the NC SBE Licensure Area Exam
AND
Completion of NCSBE Pre-service Requirements
AND
Enroll in EPP (Educational Preparation Program) CTE Restricted License(s): • Bachelor's Degree in a related field and 2 years of industry related experience in the past 5 years in any area of public safety (fire, law, medical, emergency management). OR • Associate's degree in a related field and 4 years of industry related experience within the past 8 years in any area of public safety (fire, law, medical, emergency management). OR • High School Diploma and 6 years of industry related experience within the past 10 years in any area of public safety (fire, law, medical, emergency management).
Must hold and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator’s license according to the State of NC requirements |

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES |
|
• Provides instruction and guidance within the public service sector within the area of law enforcement, firefighting, emergency medical technician, and emergency management. • Utilizes various instructional strategies including effective classroom management, hands-on demonstrations/participation computer/web-based instruction, and/or various combinations of approaches. • Coordinate CTE Student Organization activities for local, regional, state and/or national competition • Attend District PLC meetings as scheduled • Provides an engaging instructional program that identifies/considers individual student needs, interests, abilities and maturity levels of the student. • Supports student participation in CTE Student Organization. • Supports the school's programs, policies and administrative guidelines. • Performs related duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS |

PHYSICAL DEMANDS |
The work requires daily periods of walking, standing, bending and reaching in and around the school. It requires the ability to communicate effectively using speech, vision and hearing. The work requires the use of hands for simple grasping and fine manipulations. Rarely, lifts weights above 30 pounds. The work occasionally handles/works with biohazards. The work requires activities occasionally involving driving automotive equipment. Ability to adapt to a variety of different environments. Periodic outside demonstrations and project-base sessions with exposure to varying weather conditions |

WORK ENVIRONMENT |
· Must be able to work in office and public school environments, and come into direct contact with staff and students · Occasional travel is required to schools, various meeting locations and Central Service offices. |
