Job Summary
The Laboratory Assistant supports daily laboratory operations by preparing samples for fire assay analysis and maintaining efficient workflow within the sample preparation and furnace rooms. This position is responsible for receiving, processing, crushing, milling, mixing, and preparing samples using laboratory equipment and flux materials, while following established laboratory procedures, safety protocols, and quality requirements. The ideal candidate will have strong attention to detail and the ability to safely operate laboratory equipment.
Responsibilities
Sample Receiving and Preparation
- Receive, identify, label and document incoming laboratory samples according to established procedures.
- Perform sample preparation activities including drying, weighing, crushing, milling, splitting and homogenizing samples.
- Operate laboratory sample preparation equipment including jaw crushers, disc mills/pulverizers and related equipment.
- Ensure equipment is properly cleaned between samples to prevent cross-contamination.
- Maintain accurate sample tracking and chain of custody documentation.
Fire Assay Preparation
- Prepare samples for fire assay analysis by accurately weighing samples and combining with appropriate flux materials.
- Mix and transfer prepared samples into assay crucibles according to laboratory procedures.
- Assist with loading and unloading of furnace operations.
- Operate laboratory furnaces used for fire assay processes while following temperature profiles and safety requirements.
- Monitor furnace operations and report any equipment issues or abnormal conditions.
- Assist with handling crucibles and assay materials after furnace processing.
Equipment Operation and Maintenance
- Perform routine inspections and basic maintenance of laboratory equipment.
- Maintain clean and organized work areas.
- Follow equipment operating procedures and safety guidelines.
Safety and Compliance
- Follow all laboratory safety procedures, including chemical hygiene, PPE requirements and hazardous material handling practices.
- Properly handle and store laboratory chemicals, flux materials and process residues.
- Participate in safety training, inspections and continuous improvement activities.
- Maintain compliance with company policies and applicable regulatory requirements.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to accurately follow written procedures and safety instructions.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to perform repetitive tasks with accuracy.
- Ability to work around heat sources, dust and laboratory equipment.
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs regularly.
- Ability to stand, bend, and move throughout a laboratory environment for extended periods.
- Ability to tolerate exposure to heat, dust, and noise near furnace operations.
Pay: $22.00 - $24.00 per hour
