Position Summary:
The Quality Inspection Supervisor leads day-to-day inspection activities across receiving, in-process, and final inspection areas within a small, fast-paced manufacturing startup. This role is both supervisory and hands-on, responsible for ensuring product conformity, maintaining inspection processes, supporting production flow, and building scalable quality practices aligned with customer and regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
Inspection Oversight
- Supervise and perform receiving, in-process, and final inspections to ensure compliance with drawings, specifications, and quality standards
- Prioritize inspection activities to support production schedules and on-time delivery
- Review and approve inspection results, documentation, and disposition decisions
- Coordinate with production, engineering, and supply chain to resolve quality issues
Hands-On Inspection Duties
- Perform dimensional, visual, and functional inspections using standard and precision measurement tools
- Conduct first article inspections (FAI) and support root cause investigations
- Verify material certifications, test reports, and supplier documentation
- Support containment actions for nonconforming product
Team Leadership
- Supervise, train, and mentor inspection personnel
- Assign daily work, monitor performance, and ensure adherence to procedures
- Develop cross-training plans to build flexibility in a small team environment
- Foster a culture of quality, accountability, and continuous improvement
Quality System & Compliance
- Ensure inspection activities comply with company quality procedures and applicable standards (e.g., ISO 9001, AS9100, or customer-specific requirements)
- Maintain accurate inspection records and traceability
- Support internal and external audits
- Assist in developing and improving inspection procedures, work instructions, and forms
Process Improvement
- Identify opportunities to improve inspection efficiency and reduce defects
- Participate in root cause analysis and corrective/preventive actions
- Support implementation of lean and continuous improvement initiatives
Required Qualifications:
- Ability to work both hands-on and in a leadership capacity
- Experience with quality systems such as ISO 9001 or AS9100
- Proficiency with common inspection tools (calipers, micrometers, height gauges, etc.)
- Experience in aerospace, defense, or other regulated manufacturing environments
- Familiarity with AS9102 first article inspection and related documentation
- High school diploma or equivalent; technical or associate degree preferred
- 5 years of experience in manufacturing quality inspection
- 2 years of experience in a lead or supervisory role preferred
- Strong understanding of blueprint reading, GD&T, and inspection methods
- Knowledge of root cause analysis methods (e.g., 5 Whys, Fishbone)
- Experience using digital quality or ERP systems
