What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Software Engineer - Backend (Payments) position at Payva?
Senior Backend Engineer - Payments & Financial Infrastructure Payva - North Loop, Minneapolis, MN | Full-Time
About Payva
Payva is a fintech on a mission to build the financial infrastructure layer for creator-led commerce. We originate short-duration consumer installment products for high-ticket digital goods and services - powering checkout experiences for merchants in the creator economy.
We're a small, tight-knit engineering team based in the North Loop, and we genuinely love what we're building. We work hard, we care deeply about getting things right, and we have a lot of fun doing it. If you want to be somewhere where your work matters, your opinion is heard, and Fridays actually feel good - this is that place.
The Role
We're looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to own Payva's payment infrastructure - end to end. This is not a maintenance role. You'll be building and owning the rails that move money, the integrations that connect us to our sponsor bank and payment processors, and the financial infrastructure that scales with our volume.
You'll work directly with our CTO and alongside a team of engineers who take quality seriously and actually enjoy showing up to work.
What You'll Own
- Payment rail architecture and implementation across ACH, disbursements, and collections
- Sponsor bank integration and the compliance-adjacent plumbing that comes with it
- Core financial infrastructure - ledgering, reconciliation, transaction integrity
- PCI-sensitive data flows and payment method vaulting
- Internal tooling and CRM infrastructure supporting payments and servicing operations
- Hardening and scaling systems that sit on the critical path of every transaction we process
What We're Looking For
- Deep experience with modern TypeScript backend development
- Prior fintech experience - you've built on payment rails before, you understand ACH, you know what a sponsor bank relationship means operationally
- Strong instincts around data integrity, idempotency, and failure handling in financial systems
- Comfort working in a regulated environment - you don't treat compliance as an afterthought
- Obsessive about correctness - in financial infrastructure, edge cases are not edge cases
- Self-directed and collaborative - you can drive a complex project independently and work well with the people around you
- Low ego, high output
Nice to Have
- Experience with consumer lending or installment credit products and prior work at an early-stage fintech or sponsor bank-dependent lender
- Familiarity with ACH origination, NACHA rules, or RDFI/ODFI relationships
Why Payva
- Real ownership over infrastructure that matters - every transaction runs through what you build
- A genuinely fun, energetic team in one of Minneapolis's best neighborhoods
- Direct access to leadership and a short feedback loop between decision and execution
- We're mostly in-office at our North Loop space (engineers work from home one day a week) - we think the best work happens when great people are in the same room
- Competitive compensation and performance-based profit sharing
