HEAVY EQUIPMENT & AGGREGATE OPERATIONS OPERATOR- NIGHT SHIFT
Location: Clayton, Iowa
Wage: $21.00 - $24.00/hour, based on experience
Shift Differential: Additional $3.00/hour for night shifts
Employment Type: Full-time, Permanent
Work Schedule: Night shift position. Shifts may be 8–12 hours and may include weekends, overtime, and extended shifts as operational needs require.
Position Summary
Pattison Company is seeking motivated and safety-focused employees to fill a Heavy Equipment & Aggregate Operations Operator – Night Shift role. This position supports aggregate processing, re-washing operations, rail loading, rip rap production, and site maintenance during overnight operations. Operators will work across multiple areas of the plant and yard, operating heavy equipment while maintaining production quality, efficiency, and safety. This is a night shift position; all hours worked during the assigned night shift are eligible for a $3.00 per hour shift differential in addition to the base hourly wage.
Primary Responsibilities
1) Re-Washing Operations (Manchips & Materials)
- Operate and monitor re-wash systems for manchips and aggregate materials.
- General knowledge of conveyors and material flow systems.
- Assist with plant start-up and shut-down procedures for re-washing operations.
- Monitor material cleanliness and report quality concerns.
- Perform housekeeping around the wash plant and conveyors.
2) Inlet Loading – Aggregate Plant
- General knowledge of conveyors and safe material flow practices.
- Operate excavators to load plant inlets; understand inlet loading process and impacts to product quality and contamination.
- Operate front-end loaders to load plant inlets; understand inlet loading process and impacts to product quality and contamination.
- Maintain proper feed rates to ensure efficient plant performance.
- Communicate with plant operators to adjust loading as needed.
3) Rail Car Loading (D-Rail)
- Operate loaders, including scaled loaders, for rail car loading.
- Quality control of product being loaded: clean bucket, prevent cross-contamination, and confirm proper product identification prior to loading.
- Coordinate with scale/rail personnel as required to ensure correct loading and documentation.
4) Trommel Operations
- Operate loaders and scaled loaders to support trommel processing operations.
- Operate excavators equipped with breakers to size rock for rip rap as required.
- Quality control: understand products being produced and how to operate to meet required quality specifications.
- Maintain safe work zones around trommel, conveyors, and breaker operations.
5) Grizzly / Scalping Rip Rap Operations
- Operate loaders and scaled loaders to feed grizzly/scalping operations.
- Operate excavators with breakers for rock sizing and rip rap production.
- Quality control: ensure products produced meet required quality specifications and prevent contamination.
6) Road & Site Maintenance (Winter / Spring)
- Blade (grader) operations for maintaining haul roads and plant access routes.
- Loader operations for road and yard maintenance, snow management, and material handling.
- Skid steer operations for cleanup and tight-area maintenance.
- Plow truck operations for snow removal.
- Spreader truck operation for ice control.
- Water truck operations for dust control and road conditioning (as conditions permit).
7) Safety & Compliance Responsibilities
- Follow MSHA regulations and all company, local, state, and federal safety procedures.
- Perform pre-operational inspections to identify maintenance or safety issues.
- Monitor equipment performance, gauges, and safety indicators during operation.
- Report unsafe conditions, incidents, equipment problems, and quality concerns immediately.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area; assist with cleanup of spilled material around conveyors as needed.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Previous heavy equipment operating experience preferred; training provided as required
- Ability to work in varying weather conditions and on uneven sandy/rocky surfaces
- Must be able to:
- Work for 6-12 hours and perform physical tasks such as standing, bending and stooping
- Climb on and off equipment and ladders; work at heights and in physically demanding conditions
- Wear a half-mask respirator for extended periods
- Lift 60 to 80 pounds without mechanical assistance
- Basic computer skills and ability to ender data accurately (as applicable to the role)
- Strong work ethic, ability to work independently, and commitment to workplace safety
Education, Certification & Licensing
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred but not required
- MSHA Part 48 certification required (training available on-site)
- Valid driver’s license required for all Pattison Company employees unless deemed non-essential to the position by HR.
