GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs intermediate skilled work assisting teachers and students by interpreting the spoken word through sign language; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision.
ESSENTIAL TASKS
The following duties are normal for this position. · Assisting teachers and students through sign language;
· Provides an interpreting service to those students deemed eligible;
· Accompanies hearing impaired students to regular classrooms;
· Translates information presented by teachers into the primary language for hearing impaired students;
· Serves as liaison between teachers and hearing impaired students;
· Prepares by reviewing videos, lesson plans, textbooks and other materials to be used in class;
· Meets periodically with teachers regarding student progress;
· Assists the teacher with other duties when hearing impaired students are occupied or not present;
· Adheres to rules set by the school system and the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf Code of Ethics;
· Interprets verbal exchanges in the classroom;
· Interprets exchanges between student and teachers, nurses, principal and other school staff;
· Interprets films, record, and television programs;
· Interprets physical education;
· Interprets public address announcements, pep rallies and assemblies;
· Redefines terms which the student does not understand;
· Assists with various assignments during homeroom;
· Assists hearing impaired students with homework when they don't understand the assignment;
· Performs related tasks as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Thorough knowledge of sign language methods and procedures; general knowledge of classroom procedures and instruction program; ability to sign accurately and rapidly for extended periods; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents and teachers.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to two (2) years of general university course work supplemented by training in signing and considerable experience as an interpreter.

This is sedentary work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects; work requires standing, walking, fingering, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is not subject to adverse environmental conditions.

Salary : $37,716 - $54,726
