Inbound/Outbound/Specialty Shift Supervisor
Position Summary
The Inbound/Outbound/Specialty Shift Supervisor is responsible for the day-to-day execution, coordination, and performance oversight of an assigned operational area or shift within a fast-paced contract logistics distribution center operating under a fourth-party logistics (4PL) model.
In this role, the majority of physical warehouse activities are performed by a third-party logistics partner. The Shift Supervisor serves as the primary on-site operational representative, ensuring work is executed safely, accurately, and in accordance with established KPIs, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and customer requirements. This position focuses on operational oversight, issue resolution, communication, and continuous improvement rather than direct supervision of warehouse associates.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Execution
- Oversee daily execution within assigned operational areas, including inbound, outbound, picking, packing, value-added services (VAS), or specialty operations.
- Ensure work is completed according to production schedules, priorities, and service requirements.
- Monitor real-time operational performance, including throughput, productivity, backlog, quality, and service levels.
- Support smooth shift start-ups, operational execution, and shift handoffs.
Operational Oversight
- Serve as the primary point of contact between internal operations and the on-site logistics service provider.
- Monitor staffing levels, workflow execution, and adherence to established procedures.
- Identify operational gaps and work collaboratively with partner leadership to implement corrective actions.
- Escalate recurring issues, risks, or operational constraints to management.
Safety, Quality & Compliance
- Promote a safe work environment by ensuring compliance with company safety policies, site procedures, and customer requirements.
- Observe work practices and address unsafe conditions or behaviors immediately.
- Support incident reporting, investigations, and corrective action implementation.
- Participate in audits, customer visits, and compliance initiatives.
Problem Solving & Issue Resolution
- Identify operational issues affecting productivity, service, or quality.
- Perform first-level troubleshooting and assist with root cause analysis.
- Coordinate with inventory control, maintenance, IT, planning, or other support teams to resolve operational issues.
- Communicate and escalate service-impacting concerns promptly.
Performance Monitoring & Communication
- Track and report operational KPIs and shift performance.
- Participate in daily operational meetings, shift handovers, and performance reviews.
- Maintain accurate documentation of operational issues, corrective actions, and follow-up activities.
- Provide constructive feedback regarding operational performance and process execution.
Continuous Improvement
- Identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency, quality, and productivity.
- Support implementation of continuous improvement initiatives and process enhancements.
- Ensure consistent execution of updated procedures and standard work practices.
Qualifications
Required
- High school diploma or GED required.
- 2β5 years of warehouse, distribution, or logistics operations experience.
- Experience working in contract logistics, third-party logistics (3PL), fourth-party logistics (4PL), or outsourced operations.
- Strong understanding of warehouse operations, inventory flow, and operational performance metrics.
- Demonstrated ability to coordinate operations and influence outcomes without direct supervisory authority.
Preferred
- Experience in a 3PL or 4PL environment.
- Experience in a high-volume distribution center, fulfillment center, sortation center, or logistics hub.
- Working knowledge of Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) and operational reporting tools.
- Familiarity with Lean principles, continuous improvement methodologies, and standard work practices.
- Experience supporting time-sensitive, customer-driven operations.
