Summary of Program and Position:
We believe that every child deserves bright and healthy futures. Early education plays a critical role during the important developmental period, especially among disadvantaged children. Investing in early education will have a tremendous impact on life outcomes and provide thriving futures for Hawaii’s young minds.
Federally funded initiatives provide early childhood education and related comprehensive services for low-income parents and children, and children with special needs. Early Head Start (EHS) provides services in centers and in homes to prenatal parents and parents with infants and toddlers. Head Start (HS) serves children ages three through five and their parents to provide a head start for school success.
The primary responsibilities of the Assistant Teacher are working with the teaching team to implement an individualized and comprehensive early childhood education program for children ages 3-5 years and their families. The Assistant Teacher is under the direct supervision of the PreschoolTeacher.
Essential Duties:
1. Behaves in a manner that supports the agency's mission and follows personnel policies and procedures.2. Provides individualized and comprehensive early childhood education services in accordance with federal performance standards and current best practice in the field of early childhood education.
3. Implements special educational services for children with special needs and their families, participates in the development an Individual Educational Plan (IEP) using the program's IFPA form and participates in case conferences as requested.
4. Assists with the scheduling and administering of developmental screenings.
5. Ensures and maintains a safe, healthy, stimulating, individualized developmentally appropriate learning environment.
6. Organizes, reviews, and maintains required classroom records and reports including classroom expenditures in accordance with established standards.
7. Assists the Preschool Teacher in all field trip and outdoor activities.
8. Advocates on behalf of children and their families for comprehensive services that are effective and relevant, and ensures linkages are made to needed services.
Minimum Qualifications:
1. Must be at least 18 years old.
2. Must have one of the following:
a) Child Development Associate (or ability to obtain within two years,) plus 6 months paid fulltime experience working in an Early Childhood Education program (at the time of hire)
b) Associate degree (or ability to obtain within two years,) plus 6 months paid full time experience working in an Early Childhood Education program as a lead teacher (at the time of hire)
Other:
- Can obtain an acceptable criminal background check upon hire, one year later, and annually thereafter.
- Can obtain an acceptable CWS background check. upon hire, one year later, and annually thereafter.
- Can obtain an acceptable National Sex Offender Registry Check upon hire, one year later, and annually thereafter.
- Successfully complete a pre-employment physical examination and TB test upon hire and as requested
